WiFi for Meade LX200 using cheap Chinese parts

Hi

Just wanted to let you know that SkyFi is not the only way to connect to your LX200 over WiFi.
http://i.ebayimg.com/00/s/NjAwWDYwMA...TkUCO/$_12.JPG

The pictured device is much smaller and will fit in the battery compartment of LX200. Along with SkySafari 4 Plus it makes a quite nifty solution and it seems to work very well.

If there is any interest I can expand and document the build.

This is to provide additional information in regards to the WiFi connection and remote control to Meade LX scope.
I have used http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/251550876...84.m1439.l2649 from Ebay, currently retailing at AU$32.38 with a free delivery
I have contacted the seller for additional info and got very little back but enough to find out who actually makes the product, its Hi-Link HLK-RM04.
They can be contacted on info@hlktech.com. The information provided by them was comprehensive and in English. Links to both manuals and control software were provided.

The HLK-RM04 is a about 40x90x15mm unit and has two Ethernet ports, serial port and WiFi port that extends to external antenna.
I have received it in about 3 weeks supplied with 5v DC power pack (US plug), no manuals were supplied.
Thankfully the whole thing worked straight out of the box, I did not use supplied software to configure except the "Unit finder" program that simply finds the unit and let you connect to it with a Web browser, all configuration is done through that..., I have set the WiFi to AP mode, chosen the WPA2 security key, set the serial port to 9600 baud, no parity, one stop bit. I have also set the unit to server mode to listen on port 8000 TCP.

Next it was the scope, the AUX port on the scope is a 6 pin RJ12, bought 3m RJ12 to RJ12 cable at Jaycar and cut one end to about 1.2m, used pins for RX, TX, GND and +12V DC (yes, 12V can be drawn from that cable if you use RJ12 Connector with all 6 pins cabled). The power consumption is about 150mA, I have used 7805 regulator to get my 5V required by the WiFi, the power dissipation is about 1.2W on the regulator and it requires a small heatsink. If power loss is of concern one can use a small Buck DC-DC converter at a cost of about $2.50 from..., you guessed it - China.

I will not go into cabling and pinouts here but will reply to PM's in regards to that. The whole thing easily fits into the LHS battery compartment in the scope with the cable neatly wedged under the original battery cover. I did not use the supplied high gain antenna and used lower gain unit from an old router that is shorter and smaller than the supplied one, it fits inside the compartment facing down inside a opening at the bottom.

My scope has GPS and wireless hand controller (Meade branded) and I see no interference from the WiFi unit.
Basically the initial testing was done indoors, after scope initial alignment it was commanded to seek to an object from the hand controller after that I have used the Sky Safari 4+ (you have to get the Plus version or better), set it up on your Iphone, Ipad or Android device connect to the AP IP address and port 8000 (after joining the WiFi network provided by the Hi-Link device, it also provides you with an IP through its own DHCP server). The unit did not miss a bit during workshop testing and now after a night at the stars.
I would say it totally transforms the whole Meade experience which is limited in regards to the very basic "Tonight's Best".., now my Tonight's Best consists of all items of interested catalogued, sorted and presented in whichever way I want to see it...., brilliant.

Joe thanks for the info...I have to build one just to try! Sounds excellent.

edit:
Wait there's more...pins 6 and 7 on the shield are ...wait for it....USB data lines! I wonder if the software/hardware has these enabled? If so...it's almost a damn mini computer. Could run your scope and extras via wifi or LAN. Although that said...looks like data rates are pretty slow ....which probably kills this idea.

Joe where is the router interface software or does it boot as an access point?

Brendan

After setting it up the Wifi unit (it acts as a bridge for all ports) remembers its settings and boots into a Access Point mode, it acts as a router to the Wifi clients giving them IP from the built-in DHCP..., the Ethernet ports make it easier to configure as you can simply connect that to your network and using the "Device finder" access it through a Web browser (from memory it defaults to a set IP address).

No USB support as yet..., certainly no USB port to connect to...

Thanks Joe...just pwr it up and log in as an access point. Looks like the USB pins are there but not enabled in the access point settings.

Still it's a step up from bluetooth.

OK, tested today; better late than never.

Maybe a note to fill in the blanks.

Mine also arrived with a US style plugpack. Powered up and I could see the WAP, but not connect wifi with my W8 laptop as I didn't have the encryption key.

I connected to the Lan port and was given an IP of 192.168.16.x with a gateway of 192.168.16.254. Initial attempts to browse were unsuccessful, however after a reboot of the device I connected first try using admin/admin.

On my unit at least, the SSID was HI-LINK_419F and a key of 12345678 had I known that connecting via wifi would have been OK.

Wish it had USB

I'm trying to do something similar but for controlling my DLSR. The only other way is the Canon adapter and its really expensive. Hopefully they will enable USB on this board Sounds like it would be easier to implement. Right now I'm trying to get a TL-MR3040 portable wifi router to work There is some alternate firmware you can upload to it make it work with a smart phone so I think its possible to make it work with a laptop as well. Here is the link to that effort for those that want USB.

http://dslrcontroller.com/guide-wifi.php

Might be useful to some of you. Wonder if this would work to connect an Argo to an indoor computer? Has anyone used one for something like that?

Esp8266

I picked up some ESP 8266 WIFI units. They are 8 bucks apiece. Use an AT command set so no library required to integrate them to your system. Now I don't need an arduino to go with my 4-d systems touch panel. The 8266 will wire up directly to the display serial port and provide wifi. They were fairly easy to hook up once I found some docs on them. Fairly new piece so not a lot out there on them yet. They do require a lot of 3.3v at certain times. 300mah I think this is just when its first connecting then it drops back. They are 3.3v serial as well so you will probably need a level converter. I used the Sparkfun BOB 12009 which is 3 bucks. So for under 10 bucks you can get this set-up going. Very small footprint. Not much bigger than a postage stamp.

I bought one of these recently and I have found it to be fantastic.

I have a LX200GPS 10" and have full wireless control over the scope.
It seems as though Orion has a rebadged Sky Safari App called StarSeek 3, and it works very well with this unit. The cost was only $14 when I bought it from the app store.
So all up $28 for the interface and $14 for the app $42 all up is pretty good for my wallet.

I have also written some IP based software that will communicate with the interface and control the Meade scope. It is Windows based. The beauty of this software, is I have custom programmed it to have shortcuts to some of the items in the handbox control rather than drilling down and wearing out the rubber buttons. Also deep sky objects are displayed in a list box for easy finding.

I have also emulated the hand box controller so it can be operated in normal mode but saving to push all those rubber buttons that wear out.
Another thing I have found useful with this interface is someone on the web has written a RS232 to Ethernet driver. Not sure the name off the top of my head, but this will enable any software that uses serial ports to redirect the commands to Ethernet and then the interface. I have tested this and it works well.

Thanks for the great original post. Very cool piece of kit!

Damien.
