just thought id say hello to you all im new to these threads after reading about it in Sky and Telescope mag. Myself am relatively new as well to night sky observing and am also looking for a bigger telescope as well for im using a 114mm newtonian reflector at the present time.

Welcome to the forum, Ive only been on this forum for a few months but I am having a ball, I do try not to be serious too often because I find the world is Serious enough as it is. If you are looking for a bigger scope may I recomend a 250mm Dob as your weapon of choice

Hiya Zeph! Welcome!!!!

Don't worry about rushing to upgrade your scope. I had a 4 1/4" (114mm) reflector for 19 years before I upgraded to my current 12" monster. And I loved every bit of viewing through it. Just that now I can hunt down those faint fuzzies a lot (a real lot) easier.

Take your time upgrading until you are 100% sure you are getting what you need for your style of viewing: Planetary, Deep Sky, Astrophotography, Widefield, etc.

At least you have a scope to use in the meantime that will allow you to learn the sky!

Wow guys thnx for the input at the moment i mainly use my 4 1/4" scope mainly for planetary observing on a good night I can manage to get a decent focus on the lagoon nebula but only the stars seem to show with little nebulosity and the same goes with the orion nebula would love to in time upgrade to a better scope so i can then try my hand at astrophotography but until then am enjoying using my little scope

The Nebulous gas becomes more apparent the larger the aperture. In my 12" I can see colour very clearly in Orion Neb. It's not very common to see colour with visual astronomy. 99.999% of the stuff in the sky has no colour to our eyes through a scope.

But some stars look lovely in any scope with their reds and blues and oranges.

Try meet up with some of our forum members in your area.

Welcome Zephod, you and I are at about the same stage with scopes and decisions I think. You will soon find that the common recommendation is for a "Dob with a gob", the bigger the better. I am just waiting for Andrews Communications to return to work on Monday to order the 10" GSO deluxe, but I'm still undecided about the EP's to get with it.
My 114 newt finally died in the a*** 2 nights ago, the RA gear has worn down to a point where the worm drive has nothing left to grip, so I will convert it into a mini dob or mount it onto my new one to use it as a large finder scope.
