Viewing tent

Wishing to go bush for better night skies I came across this "viewing tent from Sirius Optics in Qld. Can anyone advise me if this tent is worth the $299?

I know of a couple of people who own and more importantly, use them.
I've only heard good reviews.

Hey multiweb, sorry for the delay in response but as a user will the tent be large enough to cover a 12" dob when not in use. Thanks also to jjjnettie.

Yeah you shouldn't have any problem. In mine I fit 1 table and 1 chair, the G11 with a C11 and dewshield on top, all my batteries, cables... and me!

How do these tents go blocking out the wind? Or do you just use them to protect your equipment if the weather turns bad?

keeping the scopes set low you can block most breezes, worked well for me. not good for wet wether the fly is too thin, needs a tarp over the top

it is very effective from keeping people away from bumping the scope

probably not but then you wouldn't be imaging in those conditions either

The only time I had problem with breeze was when imaging with the C11 and a dewshield the length of the OTA caught the wind. I've imaged plenty of times with my newt though in windy conditions and it does a great job. Most people in the open field couldn't image but I still went all night so it helps a lot cutting wind.

But what I like most about it is that it keeps the dew off the gear (laptop, table, batteries) and when you're done you just close the lid and go to bed.

I'm not seriously into imaging (yet) but I have played with a webcam. We regularly get gully breezes in the evening which can disrupt visual observing. I am looking for a solution to deal with that and also a family that can't be trained to turn lights off when they leave a room.

Attach the lights through an infrared and motion detector? In-laws have some of them and while not cheap they work a treat.

Take the money to pay for the electricity bill out of their pocket money instead of yours. And point out the connection between lights and showers and the electricity bill.
