Mars, 5 1/2 hr animation, RGB, RRGB, IRRGB, R(G)B

Hi All,
Have been suffering from withdrawal out here in "The Hill" due to the abnormal amount of cloud, storms, rain and dust over the last 18 days.

Feb 14th was my first clear night for a while and I imaged from sunset through to 2:46 am CSST, however the seeing swung between pretty crook and very ordinary and my images reflected that.
The jet stream map looked a lot better last night, Feb 15th so I did it all again.

The seeing was good enough to capture my first hi res avi in twilight at 9 pm CSST. I imaged thought to 2:31 am CSST and have put together my longest animation thus far, 5 hrs 30 mins. NOTE: Just how good the first image is in the animation, as previously mentioned this was captured at 9 pm CSST still in twilight and Mars was only 17 degrees above the horizon. I love doing astronomy out here.

I also captured some R, G & B avi's.
Following Mikes efforts on some pretty ordinary data from my last break in the clouds, I have presented a comparison of several different processing alternatives.

RGB,
RRGB, this is with another copy of the R channel used as a luminance layer.
IRRGB, This is using another IR images as a luminance layer.
R(G)B, This was rather interesting. The green channel was synthesized from the R and B channels instead of using the original G channel.

In all of these images and in R, G, B and IR there is a white spot on the very edge of the NPC. I have loaded an image into WINJUPOS and measured the location which is at approx long 42 degrees lat +60 degrees. As this spot is visible in all channels it is likely to be surface detail. I think this is the same spot Damian Peach noticed a few weeks ago and may be frost inside a crater.

Thanks for looking,
Regards
Trevor

PS: I captured 18 avi's and planned on presenting a selection of them but frankly, its way past time to get some sleep.

Hi Trevor

Wow – what a beautiful animation, marathon imaging session and no doubt, even longer processing session! You are doing some amazing work and exploring some quite interesting processing techniques and I am thoroughly enjoying feasting on the results.

Many thanks for sharing your passion, hard work and excellent results.

Cheers

Dennis

Excellent work Trevor, congratulations! Glad you got some clear skies - your weather patterns haven't been looking too flash lately.

Cheers -

Thanks very much Steve, by this coming weekend I hope to have sufficient descent data for an animation of a complete rotation.

Thanks David and thanks for checking out my website, it's not very professional but I reckon, with a bit of experience I will be able to make it better.

Thanks so much Dennis for your very kind words, I really do appreciate it. I also follow very closely the work that you have been doing, from your amazing images of the outer planets and their moons to the incredible images you have been producing of Sol.

From time to time I sort of feel a bit out of it, living out here in the bush, which makes sharing my passion of astronomy with others, that are just as obsessed such as you via this forum, all the more satisfying.

Thanks Rob, yep the weather has been abnormally crook of late, but when I am able to get good data in the twilight at an altitude of only 17 degrees and the seeing hangs in for 5 1/2 hrs, I sort of stop and reflect on it and there really isn't anywhere else I would rather be.

Thanks Mick, Mars is starting to shrink but it wont be long now until I can get stuck right in to my favorite planet, Saturn.

Thanks Stephen, I really am very pleased with the quality of the the IR images in the animation, especially very early on at such a low altitude and still with the sky so bright.

Thanks very much Kev, this was the best night I have had for some time and the jet stream is looking like it might co-operate through to the weekend.

Thanks Bird, now that the remnant of cyclone Olga has finally dissipated the weather should get back to our normal pattern which means more good seeing.

Hey Bird, Saturn sure is starting to look good.

Regards
Trevor

Arrrrr, I know you get some really bonza seeing from time to time over your way Bird and I am not sure if the seeing out here gets to that level, however I do get a substantial number of nights of good seeing, hint hint hint hint.

It would be great if you could fit in a trip out here one day.

Regards
Trevor

Thanks Adam, must say I am pretty pleased with one, although it doesn't run very long considering the effort that went into capturing and processing the data.
