Thumbs up Terrigal Sunrise

Hi all

On the morning of the 17th September 2009, I was headed out to Terrigal beach on a lovely clear pre-dawn morning to photograph the conjunction of the Moon and Venus.

When the sky became too bright for the conjunction, I took advantage of the lovely colours of the dawn to capture some images of the sunrise and a few impromptu waterfalls as large waves crashed over the rock ledges near by.

The pre-dawn colours were magnificent, as they reflected off the surface water on the rock ledges.

The images were captured with my Canon 20D and Sigma 17-70mm lens, and were all 3-exposure bracketed shots, processed as HDR (tonemap) using Photomatix. Final processing using Photoshop.

In the final shot, a rather large wave sent a rush of water over my waterfall - turning it from a trickle into a torrent. And yes – my feet got rather wet during this shot

Larger less compressed versions here:

Thanks for looking.

Lovely colours. Sure looks like a great place for landscapes/waterscapes.

Very nice indeed, atmospheric, and subtle use of HDR.

Mike these are wonderful, just wonderful !
I love the sunrise shots, especially #6 with the striations on the sun and the gorgeous colours of #1.

You're one of the very few I know that does HDR very well.
I've seen some examples that are way overdone which don't appeal to me at all.

Well done, good to see some images from you again.

Many thanks for your comments.

I try to ensure my HDR shots are not cartoony or over-processed, or full of halos or artifacts.

I need to get back out there and do some more photography! With the holiday at Birubi Beach coming up again, I'm sure there'll be some opportunities, like last year.
This time, I'll have the 40D and the 24-105 lens!

Nice shots Mike. Looks like a nice peaceful sunrise, must have been great to be there.

I think my favorite is the B&W one, I like the emphasis it puts on the smooth flow of the water over the ledge.
