1000 days since C/2006 P1 (McNaught)!

Hi all,

I was looking at this image the other day, and realized that this great comet was at its peak 1000 days ago. I thought that was a good opportunity to post my best shot, and see if others want to do the same. (I wasn't a member of IIS back then, so missed out on seeing everyone's images.)

This was the first astrophoto I took with my digital SLR, which I'd only had for a couple of weeks. I was quite happy with the result given that I was still trying to work out how to drive the camera. I'm sure others have better images in there collections though - so if you have a good one why not post it?

Hi Stephen,

This sure does rekindle some memories.
Without doubt this was one of the most impressive comets of my lifetime and I will never forget the most extravagant tail that was its highlight.

Thanks Trevor. Unfortunately I didn't get too see the full extent of the tail from where I am in Brisbane, but it was still an amazing sight!

Most of my images are stored on a crashed computer.
Fortunately I had a couple of them on a USB.
This was taken on the 20th when the Comet was at it's very best.
It was an almost spiritual event made even more special by having two of my very best astro pals at my side, Ponders and Astroron.

Taken with my little Canon S3IS, tripod mounted.

Comet Holmes was pretty darn special too. I managed to nab him only hours after the first announcement was made and followed through till he was no longer visible. It was thrilling to watch as he evolved over such a short time into that enormous luminous ball of fuzz.

I captured this shot of Comet McNaught as it was setting in the west.
Below the comet you can see the orange glow of a local bushfire that lit up the lower left of the frame.

Jeanette I agree, Comet Holmes was very special too and unique in that the perspective gave us a very different view of a comet than what we are used too.
Here's two of mine, one at prime focus and the other a widefield.
