Soaring on the wind

Gulls in soaring mode can look so cool.

Thanks Mike, still working on DOF with this lens. Might do a series on birds soaring.

Magnificent image of avian airfoils. U can see the thickness of the leading edge, the wing camber and the transparency showing the thin trailing edge. I can "feel" it flying Mark

Oh yeah! Agree +1 I must. You must have been pretty close to fill that full frame, or is this a crop? What camera body too? Focus has been *nailed*.

Paul,

That's a great shot. Perfect focus and great composition.

Can I just suggest perhaps sorting out your feathering (no pun intended!) as there appears to be a slight halo around the bird.

Cheers.

Regards,
Humayun

P.S. Dave, all the information is below the image.

Nice image, Paul.

I too can see the halo around the bird, particularly about the wing line and along the underside of the body.

Regardless, it captures the sense of flight very well.

Dave, this is a slight crop and yes the Bird was very close.

Humayun, I can only say that I did not do any feathering whatsoever, in fact all I did was some curves, some shadows and highlights and a little saturation. The shadows and highlights might have caused a slight halo, but nothing actively done with feathering. Bizzare. Can't work out why it is there really, but its only really faint anyway. As Matt says it can give the perspective of flight.

Thanks for all the observations and comments.

Good point, Paul. This is why I never touch the shadow and highlights tool. There's nothing that curves, levels and dodging/burning can't resolve.

Cheers.

Humayun

It is such a good tool though. It can often rescue an image and sometimes make it very special. Don't write it off just yet.

Thanks for the reply Paul. Looks like you did a grand job of it all. Having expensive camera gear isn't going to mean you'll capture the shot(s), and you nailed this one nicely. Highly enjoyable image.
