Arc Welding at Night

With the poor weather in VIC causing havoc, I had to weld up part of the front gate.
It was early in the evening which was making the seeing a little difficult.
As the minutes ticked by it was getting darker and I really couldn't see what I was doing.

I went and got the Dolphin torch and set it up to point at the area that I was welding, got ready to weld, pulled down the mask and to my elation, I could make out the area that I was welding without striking the arc.

I finished the job in quick time without having to lift my mask.

I will now be doing all of my future welding at night.

Good one Gman. Is your mask one of the automatic self-darkening ones or your standard job?

Love using the auto helmets. A real joy to use after years of stick welding with a hand held black-glass one.

And then the conversion to mig and argoshield...ahhhhhhhhhhhh

Baz.

I just have the normal mask where you need to flip down the protective glass.
I couldn't justify the extra spend when I bought the welder when it is just for home use.

My brother owns a few welders, Mig, Tig and Arc and he has one of the auto masks that has a skull and flames on it, (like an ice hockey mask) which I used to borrow before I bought my own and they are great to use as Baz has said.

I really only need to upgrade the rod/electrode handle from the cheap spring loaded CIG one to somthing a little more user freindly.

I try to encourage all of my students, high school and apprentices, to buy an auto helmet they are the greatest thing since sliced bread. For years I fought to keep my manual helmet but I finally succumbed to pressure when one day I got to work and my welding shield had been removed and someone replaced it with an auto shield I used it and now I wont use anything else.
