AVI help

During my stay at duckadang I managed to get 3 Gb (3 x 1gb) of avi's of Jupiter. I tried to process them this morning but the 3 files are unreadable. Tear my hair out aaarrrrggghhh! Rant over.

Is there anyway to possibly to recover the files? The laptop I used to get the info crashed on me at duckadang ( program not responding etc)

I would get the scope out tonight and retake the avi's but the wind is up and clouds rolling in from the SW and looks like a bit of dust coming with it.

Hi Adrian,

Did you capture only onto your laptop or did you have DV tape as well?
Do you have another computer? Perhaps if the files were transferred via a USB drive, you might be able to open them in, say, Windows Movie maker. That would at least test to see if the files were truly corrupt.

Lovely town, Roma. Went through there about 3 weeks ago with the caravan.

Hi Adrian

More info needed.
What did you record them with? What camera? What software? What codec?

Do the avi's play on their own, and just not in registax?

Or can you not even double-click on the file?

What error message do you get?

Cheers

I recorded the info with my SPC900 webcam using K3CCD Tools through my ED127 scope.
I have tried using Registax 5 and K3CCD to read the files and I get 2 error messages depending on which of the 2 programs I use.
The avi's wont play at all.

I have tried to open them up on the laptop and also the desktop and get the same error, at first I thought the USB drive corrupted the files but was wrong.
I was looking forward to processing these files but I might have to do it all again.

hmm looks beyond recovery I think.

Make sure you practise before you're out under the stars next. Just record anything, during the day or whatever, to make sure it records properly.

It was recording ok but the govt laptop I was using just crashed. I think it's about time I bought my own.
Back to the drawing board.

Adrian, I'm not 100% sure on this, but perhaps transcode etc (Linux based) might be able to repair these files for you?

Just a thought...

That's a defeatist attitude.
I'd certainly give a try to some other AVI player. eg DivX http://www.afreecodec.com/1403/divx-player-lite/
or even as I suggested previously, Windows Movie Maker, or even just Media Player. If none of those play the files, then yes, its time to give up and record it again.

I have tried everything suggested and I cannot open the files. I will now assume all is lost. I will get the scope out tonight and get more avi's.
