Uranus and moons; Oberon, Titania, Umbriel & Ariel

Hello,

Here is a re-process of some data from 2006; my migration to Photoshop and some improved processing skills has contributed to making a more pleasing final result.

Moon details (magnitude & separation from Uranus):
Oberon (m14.2, 41”)
Titania (m13.9, 25”)
Umbriel (m15.0, 13”)
Ariel (m14.4, 10”)

This image cannot be used for scientific purposes due to the extent of my image processing – I used Layers to blend in a colour image of Uranus captured with a different telescope and camera back in 2004.

Moons captured with C9.25 and SBIG ST7.
Uranus colour from Vixen 4” F9 refractor and Meade LPI.

Thanks for looking!

Cheers

Dennis

Very nicely presented Dennis,

It is pretty rare to see images of Uranus here or elswhere.

Top stuff

you are a true Master of the Universe Dennis - excellent result. I take that this is training for astrofest given the past weather patterns? will we see this on APOD or spaceweather - does deserve that

Hello,

Thank you to everyone for your nice words of appreciation, they are most welcome. To dispel any potential mystique about this image, I thought that I would post some of the components that went into the production of it; warning, the data is rather raw and dirty!
  • A single raw frame from the ST7 (3 second exposure).
  • A stack of 5 raw frames from the ST7.
  • A coloured Uranus from the Meade LPI and Vixen 4” F9 refractor with an x2 Barlow.
If I exposed the ST7 at the prime focus of the C9.25 for longer than 3 seconds, the bloated glare from the disc of Uranus completely overwhelmed the closest moon, Ariel.

Cheers

Dennis

Wonderful work, Dennis! I really appreciate these shots.

Hmmm... just working out image scale...I live about 9.7ks south of Oberon, and about 4-5 ks from Titania... therefore, I must live somewhere near Umbriel, but the maps say I'm in Norway!

Al.
