Helix "outer extension" comparison

On our previous image of Helix taken with our unmodded 40D posted recently, Jase suggested that there was more data to be extracted to show the outer extensions more.

So I have worked up from the previous posted image and found the data was certainly there as suggested.

I will now go back to the original file and process from scratch which should produce a better quality image overall rather than pushing an already processed image.

Image 3 - Highlighted the inner region and desaturated the outer extensions

Wow! So much detail there. Great job.

Certainly pushing boundaries there Barb. I think once you go back and reprocess the original data, you'll be in for a surprise. A comment; it looks like you've masked in the inner region. This is a good thing for controlling the brightness, however be careful you don't over do it. You'll want the faint areas to be relative to the bright. If you over do the masking, you'll end up with a flat looking image not presenting the highlights in the correct manner. Not sure if this makes sense at all. See how you get on. Its a case of trial and error. The good thing is, you now know the data's capability.

Your explanation does make sense Jase. It will take me some time to reprocess this one to get it just right but as you say I already know the data is there. I look forward to giving it a try.

Pleasantly surprised at the data captured by the 40D Frank. With a bit more time processing I'm managing to be able to extract more from the data now.

With much respect to you both, I reckon it looks way too far stretched and very artificial. A bit too hard and plastic looking.

However, to be quite honest guys, as a scientific image, it shows a lot about the Helix we normally don't get to see. So in that respect it is great.

I think that is superb using an unmodded DSLR Camera, I shot this last year and will return this year and add some HA with my modded 40D

returned for a look, i think youve done incredibly well to get the amount of data with a non modded camera youve captured, to go back and extract more detail with a bit of clever processsing

The processing of the outer extensions was done very quickly Baz and I realised after posting that it was a bit vivid. I have added another repro above which is a little less saturated still probably not to your taste though

Thanks Clive we didn't expect to get that much out of our data but it was sure worth delving popped another revised repro above that's it for now on Helix

That's ok guys. We each have our own tastes. I prefer a raw gemstone than a polished one, and the same goes for DSO's..to a point..

Like I said, you have captured stuff there that I haven't seen before and haven't so far been able to capture myself, so well done.
