The Whirling Dervish Nebula

Its NGC 3247-to the best of my knowledge -and as far as Google can see -no one has imaged this object-certainly no amateur image that I can find; catalogues list NGC 3247 as a galactic open cluster, some say with associated nebulosity....well certainly a lot of nebulosity!

so may I claim the right to name this nebula-the whirling dervish nebula. Do you see why?

as an image its not really good. Had problems with the polar alignment in the H alpha so had oval stars; the camera must have slipped somehow when taking the RGB, had coma which I never normally get with this telescope. Did what I could in processing but it hurts the final result of course.

So this is a place holder for when I can go back and it properly. But its kinda cool to share something that as far as I can see no one else has imaged, even if its not the greatest picture
details:
telescope ED 127
camera QHY8
mount EQ6
Filter (for H alpha) Baader 7 NM

3 hours (9 x 20 minutes) for H alpha
1.5 hours (18 x5 minutes) for RGB
combined using nebulosity to align

here's the larger version:

thanks for looking

Narayan

Can see what you mean as I can see the flaired skirt and raised arms. Lot of effort into the shot and I like it.

also known as gum 29 or RCW 49 just up above carina neb as it rises , probably why it gets little attention as its big brother grabs it all.

Very nice Narayan, I didn't even know it was there. There is plenty of nebulosity to capture. We should see plenty of renditions of this one now that everyone knows it's there.

Yes Doug, I don't think many people know of this object....it would be nice to see a decent rendition from a dark site. I would like to give it another go myself

There is an ESO version taken with a 2.2 metre telescope on the net if you google Gum 29

I can see the analogy Narayan, quite a spectacular nebula and nicely imaged.

Cheers

Thanks Narayan for a great image of something new. John Herschel gave the wrong position for this objects and there has been a mix up ever since.
I often look at the OC NGC 3293 then the OC IC 2581 then NGC 3247 and finally the nebula NGC 3199 with my 12" in that order.
I have never seen it as well as in your image of course. Here is the wikisky image http://picasaweb.google.com.au/dunlo...36538944937442

Thanks Glen..

I know from our previous discussion here on IIS that you and I share a common fascination with this region and in particular NGC 3199 and this cluster/nebula
