How do you rezize to avatar size?

Can anyone help? How do I resize a picture to the tiny size required by forums without losing the plot?

Everytime I use image resizer, or open as bitmap and shrink it down, the image becomes unrecognisable.

For instance, if scale down a picture of a person, it still looks like a person but so much detail is lost you cant actually see who it is.

I don't have photoshop anymore so how can I do it?

Baz.

Try to use Paint to open the pic then from the image drop down box select stretch/skew to reduce the size and then save to be able to meet the requirements on here, thats what i done .......but just make a second copy of the original image for your self .....cheers Kev.
