I'm in Queenstown at the moment - I can tell you that I've never been so cold as Tuesday am - zero ambient, 70kph wind chill (on jetboat) - my face was so numb I actually couldn't talk properly!
Seriously - has been my coldest trip to NZ - some of their worst winter weather for decades in parts.....
My mum lives in Christchurch, she was telling me a couple of years ago
in Dunedin I think it was it didn't rise above -13c for like 7-8 days.
Dunedin is just a stones throw and a bit to your SE.
I tried walking to a local pub in Waterloo, Quebec once in -10 with wind
chill of -25, they have ground and windchill tempts there. In an couple
of pairs of jeans and couple or so sloppy joes and whatever else I could
throw on. Dont try taken a pee on the way home lol. No bull it was literally
turning to ice before it hit the ground. And you think frost bit on ya earlobes
or nose is bad lol
While your out there, you see them mountains with the huge shingle slides.
You can run down them... boy thats a hoot!!! but then again being winter
they might be covered up. I spent a lot of time in the mountains more to
your north as a kid... Wanaka and through and up along the Haast Pass.
And further north in Arthurs Pass and the Temple Basin, some great shingle
slides up in that area... some 4500' high.

If the weather forecast is on the mark , Newcastle will be brass monkey territory overnight after the cold front gets here.

Checking the BoM site and looking at the national radar plot, that storm (off the south coast) has a heap of circulation in it an looks intense.
Damaging winds are expected to develop overnight, most likely after 3AM, between Newcastle and Coffs Harbour with average speeds of over 65 km/h and peak gusts in excess of 100km/h. Winds should ease during Saturday.

set out to do or look at... or whatever your doing there lol. I'd find the
nearest big pub with a big fireplace and settle in for the long haul.
Yep, I had a visit to Canada one winter. So cold the snow/ice was solid and so slippery in my relatively smooth-soled boots. Came down a few times!
And the most amazing things - my breath would freeze in my moustache creating all these little spikes on my top lip - very funny feeling and not very comfortable.

Yeah lol, bazaar that ya get a lil bit of that where Lee is now. But I do
remember the frozen facial hair effect in Canada, I think facial hair was
about the only thing keeping the skin of my chin still attached. If you
want cold, there is only one place civil on Earth Canada in winter.
Winnipeg in summer is like Melbourne in winter.... I'llhave a look but I think
I got a pic of me standing infront of the "welcome to Winnipeg" sign some
wheres lol... in shorts too.... dang Kiwi

im guessing you dont get along with your inlaws LMAO yep its very cold i had my scope out for 15min and i said bugger this im going inside where it is nice and toasty and i'll get my fix from some amazing pics from you lot in here
Yep, 0 deg outside. Just come in after 4 hours of drift aligning, half way there, the azimuth is spot on. Gave up on the altitude for next time, fingers have thawed out but still got frozen toes, and I'm wearing freezer boots.
Realising that one of the prerequesits for astronomy is patience.
