I actually have enjoyed them all, I have always thought that each Doctor has been given free reign to stamp their own personality on the part which is one of the reasons for its longevity.

It's so hard to narrow it down to one in my opinion, I suppose Tom Baker would have to be one of the front runners.

I agree with all that. Each Doctor is unique and that makes the show as good as it is. Tom Baker was good, although I liked Jon Pertwee as well.

One of my favourite Doctor's was Tom Baker however have enjoyed all of them in one way or another although I didn't always enjoy the series with Pertwee because due to budgetary constraints too much revolved around events restricted to Earth

I always thought that Sylvestor McCoy was heading in the right direction as well except that we didn't see enough of him.

Thanks for the heads up Houghy, I'm quite looking forward to this series. mind you they ould make it with cardboard scenery and a dollar an episode and I would still enjoy it.

Cheers

Tom Baker was my favorite as well. The last two Dr's have been pretty good though.

They got a lot of mileage out of that quarry site back then, but wasn't it amazing how scary a piece of bubblewrap, painted green and pulled on a string was when you were young!

I always liked the Brigadier's quote: "Splendid chap! All of them."
I've watched The Good Doctor since I was 8 years old when he was played by William Hartnell and as far as I'm concerned, if there's a better sci-fi show than this, it hasn't been made yet!
Love the polish of this new series but I have no problem whatsoever with sitting down and watching one of the old "cardboard and silver-frost" classic shows. In fact I've got 56 titles of the old series on dvd and complete sets of the three new series.
Yeah, I'm a Whovian and bloody proud of it too!

(Rubs hands together) "Excellennnnt"

Can't wait for this series. I go way back too, but the newer series have absolutely kicked life into the old Doccy Poo for me. I'm still freaking out that Daleks can fly...

I notice that the first episode has our Koylie in it too - should be interesting!

When they made the new series there was some self-congratulating that they had finally found a way to make the Daleks more terrifying - in that they could finally climb stairs!

It was actually a fan group that pointed out to them that exactly the same thing had been done in a Sylvestor McCoy episode of the old series, where a Dalek levitated up a flight of stairs.
(This came from the BBC's own Doctor Who website)

However going back even further, I remember as a child (35-40 years ago) reading one of 2 hard cover Dalek animated adventure books (that obviously belonged to Dog Star ) in which the Daleks were regularly flying around on their hover disks.

Glad to see that all things old are new again, which as a rule applies to Doctor Who in so many ways.

With respect to my favourite Doctor: I grew up with Jon Pertwee and Tom Baker, and watched the reruns of their shows ad infinitum so I know them best of all. Tom Baker to many is a stand out favourite, and since he served in the role for 7 years, more than any other Doctor, he is probably the best known of all.

(Any Tom Baker fans who get a chance to read his autobiography "Who on Earth is Tom Baker" should do so, but be prepared to have some preconceptions shattered.)

As much as I enjoyed Tom Baker's role as the Doctor, I preferred Colin Baker (6th Doctor, and no relation) and thought it unfortunate that his tenure was so short, and ended so very abruptly! He brought a real edge to the role that hasn't been seen elsewhere, he strove to make it different, really different.

However I have to say that as much as these guys were all great I am enjoying the new series incarnations of the Doctor even more. Christopher Ecclestone has definitely been my favourite Doctor withj only 1 season in the role, with David Tennant (whom I initially perceived as being too "boyish" and young, and too lightweight an actor) a very strong second.

I think the new, punchier (shorter) story lines have helped give these guys more to work with as character roles, but they have done damn fine jobs with the opportunity they have been given.

Finally, a quote from "Remembrance of the Daleks"
(the latter days of the old series 7th Doc, Sylvestor McCoy):

Ace: We did good, din't we Prof?
The Doctor: Time will tell Ace, it always does.

Yes, it always does!

Correct me if I'm wrong I remember as a kid one of the Dr Who movies I think Invasion of the Daleks with Peter Cushing as the Dr the Daleks could fly in that and one of the best episodes was how the Daleks came about when they introduced Dr Stavros

Skaro...and it was a war between the Kaled and Thal races that engendered the origin on the Daleks. The people were becoming horribly mutated and Davros designed the transporters for the mutants. Unfortunately, for them, he also genetically engineered them to be soulless, maniacal beings hell bent on total domination of the universe. With himself, of course, as the supreme ruler. It backfired on him, in the end. The Daleks killed him.
