Rille on floor of Vallis Alpes

Hi all,
First image of the Moon with my DMK taken after Saturn had well and trully set. The seeing wasnt great but the rille on the Valley floor is clearly resolved. Used the same setup as for Saturn 2x Barlow.

Regards
Trevor

Nice result for what appears to be pretty soft seeing.

How many alignment points did you use in registax?

Hi Mike,
I used 4 alignment points along the Valley, didn't use alignment points elsewhere in the image. I was just trying for the rille and wasn't really to worried about the rest of the image, just experimenting.

Mike, the chip in the DMK is supposed to be the same size as the chip in the ToUcam but the images I am taking with the DMK using my 2x Barlow seem to be a lot more magnified, any ideas as to why that is?

Regards
Trevor

Hi Trevor.

The chip in the DMK + ToUcam is the same size (5.6microns) and the same pixel size, so will (all else being equal) deliver the same image scale/magnification.

The extra magnification is likely due to the filter-wheel in the imaging chain. Your barlow likely provides extra magnification when the CCD is spaced further away from the top of the barlow.
With the ToUcam, you most likely didn't use a filterwheel?

My 5x powermate has the same effect, which is great. The filterwheel spacing makes my 5x about a 6x.

Thanks Mike, makes sense, my 2x Barlow must be working at about 2.5/3.0.
I might make up an adaptor for the ToUcam and experiment a bit, although the higher res of the DMK, by using the whole chip for each channel, really makes the ToUcam redundant.

Regards
Trevor

Yes definitely, you'd never go back the ToUcam.

It's not just the resolution, it's the framerate and compression too - as well as the lower noise.

every time I hear you guys rant on about the upsides of a DMK over a ToUcam, my wallet starts sweating with anxiety....

Greetings Dietmar,

I used a 16" F4.5 Newt, you can see it on the Equipment forum on the "Quarks observatory thread".

Regards
Trevor
