Did I capture a Satelite?

Hi All,

I would like to know your opinions on what satelite I captured. i was playing with my new camera at 10x zoom and taking photos of some planes as they came over, I noticed on this image a object which I think is a satelite? The sun appears to hit the sat on the same side as the plane which I thought was odd. Any ideas? I had to resize it to upload the image.

Its a cigar shaped UFO . apart from the dust spore it would be very difficult to work out what that was? Where were you looking, at what time and try to work out the part of the sky you were looking at when you took the photo. note time date and approx direction you were facing and its rough height above the horizon. I'll then plug it into skycharting programme to see what it could have been?

Iridium flares are visible during the day so it may be possible.

I have seen Satellites during the day, not iridium but was like one you see at night, but didnt look like the image. I took pics of a UFO too while taking pics of an Airforce 707 flying near my house. No idea what it was.

Hope you dont mind Kevin..I mucked about with your pic. The color I didn't muck with at all...this is the objects "natural" colour...just brought out using some tweaking.

It's got me stumped!

That red on the object look's suspiciously like the same colour as that qantas 727...or is it a 737? not sure.

Sorry, its a qantas plane, satellites dont have wings
why dont you download WXtrack at www.satsignal.net great free satellite tracking program
i use it all the time, just load the 100 brightest satellites from celestrak.com every couple of weeks to keep the tracking accurate.most satellites are about the size of a fridge appart from the space station, and hubble telescope which are huge.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for your replies. asimov you did a great job on enhanceing the object, After seeing this i wouldn't think it could be a satellite, I thought all satellites were silver and gold.

h0ughy, I took this image last month when jupiter and the moon were close together, about 4pm in the afternoon, I was looking east at the time and the plane was about 70deg high and heading north. i wouldn't think another aircraft would be allowed to fly this close to a boeing.
Astroman your images are also very interesting, I have always been sceptical about aliens in spaceships, but these thing always make you look more closely. Do you love near Richmond NSW?

i guess we will have to file it into a X files

ok, that doesn't explain what it could be....seeing I was the 'ufoologist' in my area back year's ago....& still dont believe in them lol...I do notice it's not QUITE the same focus as the jet....it looks slightly fuzzier than the jet to me....that's telling me something.....could it be something ie: a bit of crud/small bird feather (the list go's on) falling to earth past the camera not far from the lens....hence...not quite the same focus (for want of a better word?) Was the wind blowing when this pic was taken?

What film speed did you use and what exposure time, I imagine it was pretty fast.
It would be pretty hard to track a Qantas 737 with anything. It is definately not an aircraft.
It is quite probable that it was a Bolide just grazing the atmosphere, and though I doubt it, a satellite, the trail would have been much shorter.

No more petty jokes guy's, this could be something exciting.

Kev, Send the photo to AS & T for publication

Mike
