Ngc7293

Hi all, here is an image of NGC7293 the Helix nebula taken on Friday night.

the images consist of

60 @ 21.2 seconds in Lum
20 @ 21.2 seconds each in RGB

They were taken with the DSI II Pro using Envisage and then combined and processed in MaximDL. Darks were applied but no flats.

Cheers

I've changed the image of the Helix. The first one which was processed on the laptop hardly shows detail on my CRT monitor. This one was redone through the desktop. I hope it's a better view.

Cool Ric! Came out pretty good!!

That's one of the objects I have to image.

Someone talked me into imaging PN's next

Going by how faint it is in your image, it looks like I am in for a real challenge if it is that dim.

Hi guys, thanks for the comments.

Nick, it looks alright on both my monitor an laptop so I'm not sure why it's faint on yours. I am having a bit of difficulty getting it right between the two computers. If I process and upload from the desktop with a CRT monitor then the laptop shows it with a lot of flaring to the top but if I process and upload from the laptop with a LCD monitor then it's hardly visible. I am going to have to stay with the desktop and investigate this a bit more.

Ken, as above, I dont think it's that dim and would be a great challenge for the Toucam. I wonder who talked you into that

Cheers

Thanks Barb, Dave and Houghy.

I'm still saving for the wedge Houghy, each payday it gets a little bit closer then I'll break through that 30 second barrier. It will be a whole new world.

Cheers

Great start Ric. As the others have said - wedge and longer exposures appear to be your next step up. From a processing perspective, I think you'll need to look into your colour weights. The colours could purely be from the lack of rich data, but from experience you should start to see subtle tones even with short exposures. This is actually a tricky object to get right from a colour perspective. It contains hints of teal crossed between the green and blue wavelengths. Some image this object with an OIII filter and blend it into the RGB to get the desired affect. Keep at it.

Andrew, Jase and Fred, thanks for the comments and tips.

Jase, at the moment, I think my processing is definitely hit and miss at times. I enjoy processing with Maxim but there is so much more I need to learn, sometimes I think I spend more time in the help files. I have to get longer images and play a bit more with the colour.

Fred, looks great you have pulled out a lot more with your processing, It definitely looks a lot deeper and better, I can send you the Fits files, are they the files that you require or is it the unprocessed JPEG file. PM me with you email address and I'll send them to you.

Cheers all

Ric,

Very cool. I can even make out some of the tendril-type nebulae around the inner edge.

As Fred has gone to show, there's a heap more data hidden inside there!

I think I may have told you at the last CAS meeting that I was having all sorts of issues with my laptop; images would look bright and brilliant in Photoshop, but, once they were saved as JPG's they were all washed out, and somewhat dry. I fixed it -- I had my notebook's monitor profile set to my monitor back home (24" Dell widescreen). I changed it to Adobe RGB and everything is perfect now -- what I see in Photoshop is what I see in the final JPG.

Good job.

Regards,
Humayun

Thanks Humayun for your comments. I'm going to have a look at my laptops setting as well. I'll try the same and start with the same settings as my desktop and work from there.
I've downloaded Gimp as well and have been working through that, all new territory I'm exploring with that.

Cheers
