Wood is under going an amazing transformation with modern science.
Compressed wood which breaks down the gaps in the cellulous using chemicals and pressure is said to be the steel of the future. There are plans to replace steel in sky scrappers with compressed wood in construction. Same with cars in fact... or any steel reliant product.
Other are taking the dyes from wood and we have opaque wood already, they are aiming for windows to be made from wood.
In 50 years mining could be replaced by forestry for a lot of our construction/industry needs.
