Seeking discounts.

It comes and goes with me and only on expensive items in the past...however...in Lismore went to BCF and I was joking with my friend demonstrating how tight I was..the bungs came in a packet of two and I complained to him that I did not need two and it was a waste of money...so in keeping that humour alive and to embarrass him ...at the counter ...I said that I had been sick and could I have a discount..I got

$10 off a $70 purchase...mmm not bad.

That really set me aback.

So next purchase was in Repco..a old style tyre pressure gauge...only $10..I will get two ...one for my car and one for the bush basher ..so " mate can you do me a discount I have not been well" I got $4 off..
Bunnings couldn't and wouldn't but $14 in my pocket .. Price of the large kabab.... so lunch was free....
Do you seek discounts as a matter of routine?

No never Alex, Alice always says to me, you are a pensioner, ask for a discount, but i never do, however sometimes they just give me one, not often but sometimes, maybe because i look old and weary.

Funny .. everytime I am in a store like JB or Good Guys I hear the phrase from customers "Is this the best price you can do" In most instance the sales guy/gal/it will throw up a lower price. I gather they factor in haggling when put up a ticket price.

Personally I never ask for a discount ... if I agree on the price I will buy it.

I also think it comes down to how you ask. A polite way .. "Is this the best price you can do" Impolite way "I'll give ya $?? for it"

The first request I really laid it on thick, not to get a discount but to stir up my mate and continue what started when selecting bungs for the little boat....AND it goes back to an episode that he always brings up and rubs in...as I said he is a shipwright and would work on my old wooden sail boat...well one night I detected a leak and when I poked it it became bigger, it was hard to get at and I resorted to stuffing toilet paper in the hole which after considerable effort slowed the leak...well he has never let me forget it because when I told him he said that we had better get the boat up on the slip to which I said dont worry the toilet paper is doing a great job...and I earned the reputation of being cheap.

So at the check out counter my request went.. "mate I don't usually ask but is there any chance of a discount, I have been in hospital for almost 12 months and things have got a little tight and I feel embarrassed even to ask but anything you can do would be appreciated"..well matey is there beside me near busting...so we get outside and he says...the least he could have done is given you some toilet paper...he is exceptionally intelligent and that always produces great wit...

Nevertheless with the possible purchase of this Mazda sports car and it being a demo they must have room to move so I have a feeling this cancer is going to earn its keep

I have the answer Leon....a t shirt...just with the words.."any chance of a discount for an honest shopper?"

This should remind them of the shoplifters out there and therefore trigger a reward responce.

Plus maybe a printed card that you slide across with your credit/debit card.

The car is easy for me...I let them think they have pulled off the sale of the century but I only respond to a great price and when there is no more to squeeze out I work on getting other stuff..its value is retail price to me but these items wont cost the vendor anything near retail.

Buying a race bike I would call by with my bike fully prepared looking new, going to practice and buy some chain oil or spark plugs then casually stroll over to look at the bike I wanted on display...the guy would come over and sell it to me.. yes its a great bike I guess but I have to sell my bike first..I get a great trade in..then work on getting a discount..then not happy I ask him to throw in a chain and a helmet...AND he would go home and boast how he sold this guy a bike and he had only called in to buy some chain oil...everyone wins.

No one will believe that I am a senior... they always asked my name and age in hospital as clearly they found it hard to believe I was as old as their records said...So I have invented an explanation for my walking frame as it does not fit the image I wish to project... recovering from a nasty fall while testing a super bike for the Isle of Mann...just waiting for the pins to seat.. the bike is a mess...

I walked into a mcdonalds earlier this year near where I was organising a swimming sports for our schools and was there an hour earlier so thought about a quick brekkie. After ordering the brekkie deal the young lass looks at me and offered me the pensioner discount. I was taken aback as I have never been offered anything like this as I was shy of 57 at that stage "WHAT? how old do you think I am???"
She was so apologetic I got the discount anyways. Bloody 16 yo's have no idea about age, anyone over 30 is old to them.

I expect that if one could average say five percent in discounts ...not impossible as those who give them give 10% easy..the tyre pressure gauge was 20%...so think of 5% of your salary and that could be your saving which I expect would go a long way to financing your astro hobby over the years...and for you guys who need to get approval from your partner how nice yo justify your purchase by saying " but its only what I saved by seeking discounts" how could she object ?

Enjoying reading your “discount tales”…they bring my Mother to mind. She was the queen of discount, I do not think she paid full price for anything.

In my youth, I was embarrassed by her consistently asking for a discount but now fondly remember her efforts and wish I had paid more attention and better learned her skills.

To watch her “work” and haggle a price down was watching a virtuoso perform. She was a “DaVinci of the Discount” and it was downright unfair to watch her cut through a garage sale…
