Amazon is persona non grata in Australia since they dudded us badly over the GST and severely reduced our buying capacity worldwide

resulting in way overpriced goods

Hi Jeremy,

Perhaps ask a local Pharmacy about getting some "Reagent grade" Isopropyl alcohol. Some may consider this overkill. There's many ways to define purity of the stuff (that I don't know the finer points of), but AR reagent quality is a safe bet.

I'm lucky to get small amounts for free were I work. Regarding the Amazon example, it says 99.9%, but it seems too cheap to be true - just my thoughts.

We all agree with Nik on Amazon, though perhaps Nik hasn't noticed your location. Amazon is good in Japan, where my wife gets things sent to her Folks.

Jeremy, I was unable to buy high-grade isopropyl from my pharmacist but did manage to get some from our hardware chain (Bunnings). The pharmacist wanted to sell me one of those products marketed for cleaning windows - a lower grade and with some aromatics added. Would have done more harm than good I thought.

Bunnings here sells IPA, as does the local pharmacy (Reagent grade) and paint supply stores (who also sell 99% methylated spirits - though you need to tell them why ). I obtained pure ethanol and methanol quite easily, and use both (depending on the circumstance).

BUT, being in Wales, I have no idea - I do recall Boots pharmacy 30 years ago having IPA swabs for injection site prep (for diabetics etc). Just get some of those, or if that fails, buy some Zeiss cleaning swabs for optics

The UK has outlawed hardware stores, because they contain pointy things, flammable things, stuff you can write on walls with to defame the politicians and worst of all, inspire creativity and self-reliance.

Beware of glass houses.

Sailors in Nowra aren't allowed to march in the Dawn Service because they may injure themselves in the 'dark' (ie a road with street lights).

_______________

About the isopropanol, I agree with Andy that the price is incredibly low for the stated purity. I don't know whether we get ripped off over here or whether you are going to get what you pay for. Assuming it really is 99.9% and the other 0.1% is just water or some light hydrocarbon then it sounds great. The guarantee that there are no colorants or fragrances is a good sign.

I have never had any joy with bulk isopropanol from Jaycar. They kept trying to sell me iso-wipes and could not get their heads around using liquid isopropyl and a brush to clean circuit boards before and after soldering, let alone cleaning something else.

The difference I guess between Jaycar "Annoying electronic cricket kit" and defence force "HRHS" trained techs (High Reliability hand Soldering) where it has to be good enough to send it into the air on a F/A-18 or similar or you do it again.

RS Components has 2.5, 1 and 0.5 litre 99.7% Isopropyl Alcohol ....

https://au.rs-online.com/web/p/produ...E&gclsrc=aw.ds

I have a spray can version from some time ago for cleaning circuit boards, fux etc... but not sure if it was also from RScomponents.

For Jeremy:
RS Components is widespread throughout the UK (with some outlets in or close to Wales), see:
https://www.google.com/search?q=RS+c...E,lf:1,lf_ui:4

100% this is the problem with the knee jerk reaction in the Uk we really are the nanny state.

I used to shoot at Bisley, just .22 and with my local gun club, when one person many many many years ago shot some people, TERRIBLE and tragic, totally, they banned all guns, now supermarkets are banning the sale of single sharp knifes, sets only, my chemist said "this is a dangerous liquid" and not stocked because drunks buy it

many thanks, now that you have told me exactly what I need because I was mixng it up with this, I have ordered 500mm £12

Just buy some Zeiss wipes, diabetic injection swabs or even eyeglass swabs. Camera store, pharmacy, gun store (I use Zeiss wipes on my rifle scopes).

You only need one per eyepiece.

I use these all the time on my glasses (glass and acrylic) and even used them on telescopes before: https://www.boots.com/opticians-serv...s-20s-10190796 - note the ingredients: Isopropyl Alcohol, Water, Fragrance.
