DNA ancestors.

I notice there are a couple of businesses where apparently you supply DNA and they tell you something.
Has anyone tried one of these places?
What can you find out?

Depends on what you pay for. The Ancestry angle can identify the geographical areas where your ancestors came from, but you can get a lot more specific than that. These days, you can get an idea of the kinds of diseases you are most susceptible to. Breast cancer, for example, often has specific markers and I can understand why some people would want to know that.

Question is, do you want to know the detail? I for one don't; life is for living, not worrying... although I have a pretty good map of what happened to my ancestors for about 5 generations and its pretty good news.

The distant ancestry angle is more interesting though. I can trace my family back 12 generations with some accuracy and have "outliers" in the 10th century, but that's it. Genetic analysis can go back millennia, and I am considering that atm...

I've got a feeling I am related to god himself! That hunch is based on the fact that every morning when my wife rolls over and looks at me, the first thing she says is, "oh Jesus Christ!" I'm pretty sure I've got a lot of lost brothers out there as well...

Whilst it might be a fun thing to do at present, i wonder how long before the insurance industry or govt demand that the data be made available to them so they can "better plan for your future".
ie there was a good discussion recently that if you go for "mental counselling" of any sort, you must report it to your insurer, and they can then deny you any insurance for any mental problems, even if totally unrelated to the initial investigation you went in for.
Its a legal minefield, so not sure i want full DNA to be given to that lot yet.

ABC show 'The Checkout' did a segment on one of them, and described it as somewhere between astrology and complete guesswork.
It's probably a safe bet that they are not all that bad, but you'd want to check what you were paying for.

Thanks everyone.
I supposedly have a link to royalty or nobility via a ******* son of someone.
I think it was probably made up but it would be interesting to know if there could be any truth in the idea. Mainly cause one could go back centuries.

I dont care enough to do anything.
Thanks again.

Guess work at best

"To tell people their ancestry, consumer DNA testing companies compare markers in customers' genes to markers from other people around the world that are in their databases. They use those markers to give you as close an approximation to your "ancestry" as they can".

If you have any English ancestry, you almost certainly have some "royal blood". According to "Who Do You Think You Are":

The 13 monarchs who reigned between 1066 and 1485 fathered at least 40 *******s between them. Henry II leads the field with around 20. Descendants of Edward III, legitimate or otherwise, are believed to be in excess of 4 millions. Some experts believe that practically everyone alive with British ancestry will have a connection with this king.

ancestors

My maternal Uncle and my brother did a family tree a few years ago and we on my Mums side go back to at least 16th Century - before that the records were dodgy and the names were unreliable.
My rellies in the UK are related to the Timpson shoes mob- a big shoe repair chain. Sadly not close enough related to share in the spoils of corporate munificence.

Word is I'm related to a German Baron ... Baron Sir Ferdinand Von Muller.

My Father (
born 1914 ) was a German Merchant Seaman ( Schneider ) being his last name.

I was put in an Orphanage at 3 months ... adopted out and became a ' Halsey ' .....

I wonder if there's a ' Castle ' waiting somewhere for me

Col.... ( Sir Col Flash Drive )
