Lightbulb Dark Sky Launch

Dark Sky images show, meteogram-style, ACCESS or GFS hourly, total cloud cover forecast and moon phase (% illumination), and moon/sun rise/set times for particular locations out to ten days, to identify dark sky night opportunities. Dark sky night hours are defined by cloud cover < 20% and moon illumination < 50% (or no moon), and are displayed using star icons near the top of the graph. The table displays values of the moon phase and cloud cover during the night time hours using colour, transparency and symbols to visually depict the moon phase and dark sky night opportunities.

This service is relatively new. Please let us know if any issues.

It is only a quick screen capture showing the main functionality.

You can head up to myCFN fill in the survey then have a play with it along with all the other features available at supporter level and give us your feedback.

The Dark Sky module is functional but still in development and subject to changes. The time periods sync with the locations meteograms. We're still working on syncing the models (ACCESS/GFS) and possibly the absolute times with the forecast maps. Also in the works is some indication of seeing and surface wind in the table underneath.

Wind fields

Wind speeds (in knots) are now added to the Dark Sky table. The stars will be blurred accordingly to reflect seeing as a visual aid but the air speed values are still displayed for you to assess your conditions.

Hi guys,

Quick question, is the starry background Adobe Flash driven? The feature works for me, but I do not see a starry background using Chrome. But I also have Flash plugin disabled.

Not critical by any means as I have a grey scale in the background that I can make out when it is perfectly clear versus cloudy or seeing is unstable.

CFN doesn't use Flash as it is deprecated and will not work in many browsers. The starry background is a feature that is off by default. You can turn it on in your control panel.

Thanks, found it. My preference is viewing the grey scale, easier to see the changes.
