This will rock you
from wikepedia
Brian may-more famous for having written "we will rock you" for Queen has written an astronomy book released earlier this week
Quote
May attended Hampton Grammar School (now Hampton School) and the prestigious Imperial College London Physics & Mathematics departments and was part way through a Ph.D. programme at Imperial College (in the physics/infrared astronomy field) when Queen became successful. He never completed his astronomy doctorate. He had written most of his thesis but never submitted it, although his professors claimed it was strong enough to earn him the doctorate.[citation needed] As of 2006, he is working on the updating and completion of his Ph.D.[1] He was a co-author of two scientific research papers: MGI Emission in Night-Sky Spectrum (published in Nature 240) and Investigation of Motion of Zodiacal Dust Particles (published in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society 166). He was awarded the honourary degree of Doctor of Science in November 2002 by Hertfordshire University, although it is not typically customary in the United Kingdom for honourary doctors to be called "Doctor". He is the co-author of Bang! – The complete history of the Universe with Patrick Moore and Chris Lintott, which was published on October 23, 2006.

Another "rocker" that has always been interested in astronomy is an acquaintance of mine - Wayne Parker from 80's band Glass Tiger. A few years ago he started making observatories! Here's his latest "invention"

Brian has often been involved with Sir Patrick on the-sky-at-night in the UK for the last few years. I always thought that they were lining him up to take over when the main man retires.
Unfortunately, whilst a brilliant guitarist and suitably qualified in the astro field, he ain't no front man (as is so often the case)!

Yes, Brian May was an astrophysicist with a strong publication record for a PhD student, before Queen.

Hi All,
Very interesting thread,
I also have been a Queen Fan, for a long time.
As a would be Guitarist,(Never at my age),
I have known for some time,MOST of the Band were,Very highly Educated.
Freddie Mercury (Singer),Born in Zanzibar, was a Graphic arts designer,
Roger Taylor,(Drummer),Started as a Dentist,BUT, I do Believe,Didnt finish the course,
Brian May,(Lead Guitarist),Univerisity Trained,Astronomer.
John Deakin,(Bass Player),Electrical Engineer.
I could be wrong on some points, but not too far,I think.
Regards.
John

Freddie was born in Zanzibar - not sure of his parentage though. Brian May actually built his own electric guitar from scratch too - used it most of his career.....

Yep the Floyd does rock. I think they would all have been architects if they hadn't gone into music, if memory serves.
Clear skies,

Hi Seeker,
Yes,I have it,it is indeed very good,
The thing is though,TO ME,no matter who it is,or how hard they try,Nobody seems to be able to match the,Tonal Range Freddie had.
I also have "Live at Wembley Stadium",bought for me by our youngest Daughter,it is a
Fantastic Concert also.
Regards.
