SALE OF EQUIPMENT
Expressions of Interest invited. Price will be subject to negotiation but I am very conscious of the age of the equipment which is situated at ‘The Gap’, a suburb of Brisbane.
I have made major changes to my instrumentation and am now operating several larger Schmidt Cassegrain instruments and as a consequence wish to dispose of the following:
1. “Cave” brand (USA), 16 inch (41cm) F6 (2,450mmFL), Observatory model Newtonian reflector (Mfg. 1979.) Solid, 2.4” shafts, Mounted on steel pier. AC 240v power. Adjustable speed drive and slow motions on both axes. Variable illumination setting circles.
Attached to this instrument and also included are:
Cave 10 inch (25cm) F6 guide Newtonian with guiding head arrangement,
6 inch (15cm) F5 Newtonian Finder with 2” diagonal & 2” focuser for astrophotography,
60mm refractor,
60mm finder (X10 approx), Two 8X50 finders.
The above items are to be sold as the one unit and the purchaser would need to dismantle and remove as appropriate. Components can be disassembled and moved by two people and there is very good vehicular access. A standard one tonne utility should suffice.
The instrumentation will require a building 3.5 metres internal width dimension. If the telescope is ‘parked’ horizontally either east or west of the mount, then an internal height of 1.9 to 2.0 metres would be sufficient for all the present attachments (as per the image). A lowered side wall height of 1.5 metres would allow full aperture east and west access right down to the horizon.
Various garden sheds of the required size to form the basic shed (before modification), are available new on the internet for under $1,000.
Included will be a range of eyepieces, other accessories, and parts.
This instrument has been used since 1980 to time over 7,000 lunar occultations, many asteroidal occultations, confirmation and support images for Rev Robert Evan’s supernova discoveries, etc etc. etc. (Refer also recent AS&T article May/June 2014 pages 86&87.)

Reason: Items 2 and 3 withdrawn from sale
Well, I cleaned the corrector plate and secondary of the 8 inch Celestron Classic and tweaked the secondary adjustment and it came up very nicely - beautiful diffraction rings. The simple drive works well, so I figured it is worth more to me that the few hundred dollars I just might possibly get.
Same with the Russian lens which is set up with 90 degree diagonal, only there at X140 odd, the diffraction rings are a bit messy. Impeccable flat field low power stuff though.
So I have withdrawn these two items from sale.
Now as far as the 16" setup goes, I don't expect much and I have worked out a simple way everything can be disassembled and removed. The 'Cave' brand was renowned for their good optics, and here you have two of them, a 16 inch F6 and a 10 inch F6. (The third one, a 6 inch F5 was sourced elsewhere many years ago and is of very good quality optically as well.)
