The loss of the Apollo 1 crew on this day in 1967 was the first of the three major tragedies to befall NASA.
RIP. Virgil "Gus" Grissom, Ed White, Roger Chaffee
19 years and one day later tragedy struck NASA again with the Challenger disaster and then again 17 years and 4 days later Columbia disintegrated on reentry.
