That's really interesting - to think that some of the oldest stars in the universe are, cosmically speaking, in our own backyard - or is it simply because it is harder to study stars that are further away ?
I only recently appreciated the fact that just about all the bright stars you can see with the naked eye are in the Milky Way - I tended to think of the milky way as being the concentrated band of stars and bodies towards the centre of the galaxy and not those that are in other directions in relation to us
