Just downloading Windows Vista RC1

I'm normally a Unix (and Mac too) user, but I just recieved an email from Microsoft Tech stating that I was eligible to try out the new OS taking over from XP. The .ISO is a 3Gb download, but I can have it now.....

It's a very fast download site, so that's good. 5 minutes in and it's already done 150mb.

I'll let you know how it goes after I install it onto a spare disk. I'm quite looking forward to running the new GUI - and to see what MS are going to encourage the public to use for the next few years. I also wonder what's going to break..... again!

You need a pretty tough machine to run it The GUI is power hungy. It has heaps of eye candy and for a beta it runs pretty good. I like it a lot

being a linux freak myself I think MS are copying some of their ideas, if ya cant beat them join them like Apple did. They are only encourage eveyone to use the beta so they dont try Linux

Very nice indded. The RC1 installed flawlessly, even if it did take a while as an upgrade. I installed into a separate partition first-up and that worked well. I then upgraded my home PC and it's running beautifully.

I'll experiment a bit and get back with some thoughts.

It's hard to tell - I guess it depends on the individual installation. I can't remember how much room I had left prior to the install, but I'll do another machine at work this week and see. It'd be about 3-4Gb I guess....

A reasonably meaty machine David. I'm running 1.5Gb of RAM and a big disk. It seems OK on a standard Radeon 9600 video card too.

When i first started in IT I quickly learned some few simple truths. The same user found the same PC faster post a rebuild, this led me to conclude that for whatever reason post loading of OS and applications the system progresively appears slugish to the user. Often this was more a user impressions than a measruable reality, but as often there was a measurable diffrence. There are several factors that cause this but thats are beyond this discussion. The point i wish to make is with early releases like this i am always cautious to see actual user reports from people who have trialed it for 3-6months in a live environment. As yet i have not even looked at VISTA, I prefer to wait till RTM's (release to manufacturers before trialing). But based on the reviews of RC1 i think i will give it a go probably using Vmware Server or MS Virtual PC at lest to check it out.

As an IT & Development group manager, my simple rule of thumbs are these:

1) Don't try it on a mission-critical machine.

2) DO TRY IT - because by not getting in now you may be accused of sticking your head in the sand - it will come, so why wait? I'd rather be informed prior to when the final product ships, because you know that your customers are going to try it as soon as it's available.

I dont disagree with trialing it. From Win98 to XP i can say i have trialed all betas that came in between. But i find the RTM's to be more reliable for load testing. I have just not had the time to get around to Vista yet.

had to laugh earlier in the year when i saw my mates pc with a vista skin running xp - i thought it was VERY mac OS 10 looking, with the eye candy wine gum slider bars ect. and polished aluminium splash screens - who's copying who?
not that i would be fully happy recommending macs much anymore these days, their build/parts quality has slipped so far since they started making them in china in recent years, to compete with the cheaper PC's, nothing wrong with the OS tho, which is just awesome, but I find it very sad they have chosen that path. too busy getting mega rich off ipods and itunes

Agreed. Apple has mostly led the way with lots of great innovations found in every modern OS these days.

I reckon that the day will come where Apple WILL release MacOS for general use on the Intel platform.... as they've already set the stage with the new Intel Macs that run both OS's NATIVELY. Verry noice!

When that gets going, I think iPods are going to take a back seat for a while.

hehe.. yeah - at work I've got a 36mbps microwave link direct to an ISP which hooks us into their internet backbone. It's quite nice.

Oh! The 150Mb in five minutes is slow - that's due to Microsoft's server and everything else in between being unable to supply me that fast.

Personally, I think Vista is bloat all around. Crappy PC's like mine ( I have integrated graphics, LOL) won't be able to run and experience the full blown vista experience (think the Aero feature). Its probably gonna have lots of security issues and bugs in the early stages of release too.
Don't get me wrong, Vista will look awesome on high-end machines but for others, they will have trouble running it.
I use XP but sometimes I use linux
