Globular Clusters (gc)

There are 147 GC in our MW galaxy
Some statistics.

1. The 10 brightest globular clusters by magnitude in order are:
NGC 5139 Omega Cen is the brightest.
NGC 104 47 Tuc
NGC 6656 M 22
NGC 6752
NGC 6121 M 4
NGC 5904 M 5
NGC 6397
NGC 6205 M 13
NGC 5272 M 3
NGC 2808

2. The 10 brightest globular clusters by surface brightness in order are:
NGC 1851 has the highest surface brightness.
NGC 7078 M 15
NGC 104 47 Tuc
NGC 6388
NGC 6715 M 54
NGC 362
NGC 6441
NGC 5824
NGC 2808

3. The 5 nearest globular clusters are:
NGC 6397 is the nearest GC, only 2.2 kpc away = 7.2 klyrs
NGC 6121 M 4
NGC 6544
NGC 6656 M 22
NGC 6540

4. The 5 most distant globular clusters in our MW galaxy are:
Eridanus
NGC 2419 82 kpc = 270 klyrs
Pal 3
Pal 4
AM 1 is the most distant, 119 kpc away, 390 klyrs

5. Half of the globular clusters have NGC numbers between 6000 and 7000.
Most have RA from 15 to 19. The following NGC GC have RA 0 to 11.
NGC 104 47 Tuc
NGC 288
NGC 362
NGC 1261
NGC 1851
NGC 1904 M 79
NGC 2298

6. NGC GC with low concentrations are in order:
NGC 6496 has the lowest concentration.
NGC 6809 M 55
NGC 5897
NGC 6101
NGC 5053

7. NGC GC with high concentrations are in order:
NGC 6624
NGC 6681 M 70
NGC 6752
NGC 7078 M 15
NGC 7099 M 30 has the highest concentration.

Thats some great research Glen

In my experience the 2 easiest globulars to resolve are;
  • NGC6397 in Ara. The nearest and 7th brightest
  • NGC6656 (M22) in Sagggitarius. The 4th nearest and 3rd brightest
