noise suppression

I note that imagers do not necessarily take as many darks as lights; say
50 lights and 20 darks. When working with the camera's noise
reduction enabled [thereby halving imaging time], can I employ the same
method, or do I need to let it do it's thing for each exposure? In other words is noise reduction simply a dark, or does the camera do other things as well to try to reduce noise?

Oops! I think I've just realised that when noise reduction is enabled, each
image comes from the camera with the reduction already applied, so the darks would not affect the other subs that don't have their own
accompanying darks. Sorry to have wasted any respondent's time.
