Google Photos

http://www.engadget.com/2015/05/28/google-photos/

It should be really good to backup astrophotography and other photos, but it is not clear if the images will then be public??? Hopefully not... What do you think?

Yes, it is private, but you can share a link if you wish (like in Dropbox). Nice I think, as it is free and unlimited (contrary to Dropbox, which is free only up to 2 GB). And Google Drive is only free up to 15 GB I think.

The new Google Photos service offers unlimited storage for "High Quality" images which are 16 Megapixels or less, but if you are using pictures which are over 16 MP, you might choose "Original" storage, but this consumes space on your Google Drive (you get 15 GB free storage on Google Drive by default).

The on-line Help says:

If the camera takes photos with 16 megapixel (MP) resolution or lower, most stored photos will essentially look the same using either storage option.
If the camera takes photos with a resolution higher than 16 MP, then photos will be downsized to 16 MP.

Yes, I had read that. But I don't think it is bad. Not really the best resolution these days, but pretty good compared to just a few years ago...
