Looking for Astronomers in Quilpie

Hi all,
Next weekend (17-18, Apr 2015) I will be in Quilpie, about 2hours west of Charleville. Anyone on the forum live out there or knows any astronomers I could catch up with?
Unfortunately I will depend on a contractor for transport because we are doing some work out there, so I can't go the Charleville in the night.
Looking forward to hear from you,
Renato

Hi Renato,

I can't help you. I am too close to Brisbane. That place is a dust bowl. Back in 1977 the Army staged a huge exercise. Brahman Drive. The Yanks and Kiwis were involved. I was part of it.
Red dust like fine flour grade got into everything.
Very dark skies
Great place for viewing if you get away from dirt roads and wind at night. Cars stir up dust so go up wind from the road if its blowing across the road.

Have a good visit.

I observed the big Leonid meteor shower of Nov 2001 from Quilpie. There is a dry "lake" and recreation area a few km north east of town. In Nov there were a lot of mossies. I got eaten alive but it was a good quiet dark spot. Joe

Pity that you can't get into Charleville, there is an astronomy/observatory center there, http://www.cosmoscentre.com/
