Touring Tassie

Well, I'm off in the morning. Two to 2.5 weeks before I'm home again, with 10 days in Tassie on the bike, and then World Superbikes at Phillip Island.

Should be good! Hoping for some good CME's and aurora activity while we are camping!... although I can only fit in a general purpose zoom lens, but I'll do my best.

Al.

We went to Tassie in November. We took our old 911 over on the Spirit. They have some of the best driving roads in Australia down there. What a blast it was. We were there for 10 days and only got to do Devonport, Launceston, the east coast, Port arthur, Hobart & the Huon Valley. Then back up the guts via the Convict Trail (I think it's called). Did Hollybanks Treetop Adventure out of Launceston. That was great. Did the Airwalk down the Huon Valley. That was awesome as well. Beautiful scenery, fabulous local produce for lunch every day, nice people, and did I mention some of the best driving roads in the country?

We ran out of time. Hope to head back soon for another week and a bit and do the south, the highland lakes and the west coast. Fly/drive this time.

As far as the aurora goes, the kp index prediction is for the next few days is 2 - 3 , so you might get lucky if you're a fair way south. Generally, to see it in Tasmania, you need around 5 - 6 according to the kp index chart . We missed out.

Yes, we did the east and north last time I was there in a car. This time we are concentrating on the west and the central tablelands, but we will probably sneak a bit east to do Jacob's Ladder and a few roads around Scotsdale and Targa especially if the weather is nasty to the west at the time. The GS is good fun, dirt or tar doesn't matter

It's a bit hot here in the Huon Valley right now - 30C today! But cool for the rest of the week. So much to see in southern Tassie.

Ummmm, you'll need a month for a glance. You can do the Pedder rd but it wont get you all the way to the West coast. Out Via Derwent bridge is also beautiful. Allow 6 hours, with just a couple of stops. Bit of a Vomit rocket for kids. They call it the "Wild West" for good reason. Prepare for 4 seasons, you'll get them Stay away in Winter unless you are well prepared. Prepare for sore eye's from gapping at the gob smacking beauty and remember, the pollies wanted to dam, mine and log it and the current box head still does.

Eh, its a gorgeous place, period.

If you are a golfer, get an experience by playing the course in
Rosebery on the west coast. [take wellington boots with you].
