Can I save a printer?

I'm being stubborn and/or frugal and/or a fool. I have two non-functioning printers and I want to get one working printer.

The first is a hp C309 which has had a fair bit of use. It's now giving mostly 'print system error', though it occasionally throws in a variation. I've gone through the help but all to no avail. I suspect it is an electronic problem and this one is off to printer heaven.

The second is a slightly later model hp C410 which has had very little use. It seems to be in working order except that it refuses to load paper. All the mechanisms work but the paper remains stationary. When I compare it to the other printer, the rollers on the arm that swings down to move the paper into the printer feel different. On the C309 they feel softish and a bit tacky but on the C410 they are harder and not at all tacky. I suspect that this is due to the long period it was sitting round unused.

Since the mechanisms are, as far as I can see, identical, I could try to do surgery to swap the rollers. Of course it is most likely that I will convert two piles of scrap plastic and metal into about 10 smaller scrap piles but all I would waist is time. The alternative is to try to reinvigorate the rollers in place. Maybe some sort of magic spray?

Are there any printer gurus out there who can enlighten me?

I'm assuming you have tried all the things suggested on this page?

Unhappy

Printers are now disposable items!
The ink costs more than the printer so when the ink runs out it's
cheaper to trash the printer and buy a new one.

I HATE THIS!!!

Unfortunatley it's generally not worth the time, effort and/or cost
to fix them. Even if you fix the current problem something else will
fail pretty soon.

Designed obsolescence is the new world order. Nothing much lasts more than 3 years these days. Laptops are now designed to last 2 years, IF you are lucky.

Have a crack at it - nothing to lose! I know I would. I have a garage FULL of repair projects I am SLOWLY getting around to. Problem these days is not many people even know how to tinker - brought up in a society of everything is given, everything is obtainable, or get someone else.

It's working. Too easy Andrew. I 'cleaned' the pick-up rollers with clean water and now it feeds paper. I hadn't considered dirt to be the problem because it was working before not being used for a year or more and when I tried to use it again it wouldn't pick up the paper. No dirt came off onto the cloth, so I don't think it was actually dirty. I think I just moistened and softened the foam rubber coating the rollers. Whatever - I'm hoping for a few more years use (we only do a few pages a week now anyway).

Brian and Lewis, this is an all-in-one and I did try to buy quality. The now-dead one must be 5 years old and at times has been used pretty hard at times. The equivalent replacement costs about 3x the cost of a set of cartridges.

Humayun, I'm a peaceful man and tend to vent frustrations on the weeds in my vegie garden. And I certainly treat my vinyl very well. [In fact I just finished listening to Todd Rungren's Utopia 'Another Live' on vinyl; it must be 35 years old and there is scarcely a crack or pop.] BTW how do you find these things?

Too easy mate!

My printer is an old hp laserjet 1100 (first released in 1998!). It is so old that it used a parallel port, which modern computers don't even have. I need to use a printserver box to interface between the parallel port and a NIC port

Printer still works and I can only remember changing the laser toner cartridge once in the last 10 years or so

AstralTraveller,
If you have ever cleaned these rollers in the past using alcohol then
it could be the cause of the problem.
The alcohol hardens the rubber, they should only be cleaned with
warm, mildly soapy, water.

Anyway, glad you got it going again, one less printer in the landfill.

I am still running an old HP LJ5 using the parallel port to ethernet
solution.

I had a canon that I loved and it threw up a line gap that I couldn't get rid of.
Found spider poo on the optical sensor plate after I stripped it..... you just never know what you will discover

Andrew,

You need to watch Office Space for that scene to really make sense.
