Sir Patrick Moore got me hooked on astronomy at a very early age. I have many of his books and still enjoy reading them.

A true gentleman who would reply to every letter he received. *He would even speak to people who looked him up in the local phone directory and called him. *He done so much and inspired so many people into astronomy. *I would put him down in the top ten astronomers of all time. *The caldwell catalogue is named after him.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caldwell_catalogue

He apparently had a good sense of humor. *I believe he once tried to get to the BBC studios using nothing but a compass and got lost. *He also took part in some of the BBC TV shows like Morcome and Wise, The goodies.

The list of things Sir Patrick Moore done for Astronomy is endless.

He was a great loss to the education of Astronomy to the masses.

Remembered his books in many a library as a kid and was always fascinated by

the many incredible pictures of Saturn, Andromeda etc.

He was a larger than life character who inspired many including Brian Cox and will be missed by many.

I read some of his books like fireside astronomy and it is an enjoyable and crackling good read.
He made astronomy more popular and was a good promoter of the hobby.
