Over the last week or two there has been X and M class flares more than you can poke a stick at. The k-index has become liable as a result but today it has risen over 6~7. The solar wind is increasing too! There might be a slim chance of an image just before the full moon rises....but only slim..
Why couldn't this happen two weeks ago?
Anyway a taste of things to come.

I know I would have missed any chance of seeing it now the full moon is out, but is it possible to see a aurora in Melbourne? Or would you have to go further south?

Flinders is good. I go to Blow hole track.Nice and dark to the south.

Tonight, the edge of the visible aurora according to models is about 2000km south of Melbourne. The earlier post suggested someone might pick it up in a photo. It was never likely to be visible to the eye unless the storm radically strengthened.

During winter, the pole points away from the sun. In summer, the higher latitudes have few if any hours of darkness. This applies to both hemispheres. Auroral displays tend to be most extensive around the equinoxes providing large flares also occur of course.

A KP 5 aurora would be visible from a dark site without any moon. It typically presents as being bright and grey. I have seen heaps from south of Adelaide in recent months and have imaged aurora often enough now to know what to expect. This time around the moon is the biggest problem, notwithstanding the cloud which makes it difficult to see.

Just went up to Braddons lookout not far from Ulverstone
Low on the horizon just a band , comes up green in the camera a Panasonic fg3

I walked to the end of the street, once again the aurora was stronger than the city skyglow although when I first checked from home it was quite a bit stronger, took some images, I'll upload some tomorrow.

Here are a few from last night, last image of my mate the possum in the tree was clearly visible in the full size image.

The poor wee all-sky camera at my observatory has almost been overloaded by the aurora. I have days-worth to trawl through and process into a "highlight reel."

Maybe it's time to adjust the sensitivity settings downward?
