WANTED: Meade 10 inch SCT tube only or with mount. I don’t care if the mount doesn’t work as I will be removing it from the fork mount and mounting it on an EQ6 mount. I am looking for an older Meade pre ACF. The reason I want an old Meade is because I want to experiment with a Hyperstar System, the Hypestar System only works on the old scopes. If you have one PM me. UPDATE I have had this Wanted Ad on here for a while now and keep getting people wanting unrealistic prices for a scope that’s between 10 and 20 years old.
I keep getting offered Classic Meade scopes for between $1500 and $2000, you may have paid a small fortune for it back in the 1990’s when the Australian dollar was worth half the American dollar but times have changed and technology has changed.
The Australian dollar is now worth more than the US Dollar and the Classic Meade scope has been superseded twice, the first time with UHTC coatings that increase the light transmission by 10% and then by the ACF optics which are a vast improvement optically compared to a Classic.
I will pay a fair price for your older Meade but I would like to point out to those who think their 10 or more year old telescope is worth thousands of dollars.
1. Pre ACF and Classic Meade SCT’s are ok for visual astronomy but limited value for modern astrophotography where the demand optically is very high, that’s why they are hard to sell.
2. The new ACF optics are far superior to the older optics thus devaluing the older scopes for any serious observer or astrophotographer.
3. Meade are notorious for NOT providing parts for older telescopes and even if your mount is working now it won’t be repairable in the future when it fails, again limiting its value to those who know.
4. The only real value in an older Meade is the tube because it can always be removed from the dead mount and resurrected on an equatorial mount.
5. I am not looking to pay a fortune for one of these scopes as it will not be my primary scope, I just want to experiment with the Hyperstar System, I have an ACF 14 inch LX200 for the majority of my observing.
So if you have a realistically priced 10 inch telescope between $500 and $800, PM me with your price.
Ok if you can buy a new ACF OTA for $2399 and second hand ACF’s are selling for half that, ($1200 for a recently advertised one on Iceindspace. ) What’s a 10 – 20 year old OTA really worth? If it was made in the 1990’s about $500 to $600 and if it’s a UHTC model early 2000’s about $800. I have been offered a few Classics for around $1500 - $2000 which I think is unrealistic. Am I being unrealistic? I would be interested in what others think.

Yep, agree on your logic. If I look at my bargain LX200 and break it down to what I paid, then the OTA part was a very cheap price. Old equipment is just that, and expect it to not be perfect so why pay a premium price.
What I have found is when I want something that may be out there somewhere, I usually state up front what I expect to pay, and that way through my experience, if someone reads my ad/message, they might have something lying around in their shed and think 'that price for my item..why not, hope they still want it'.
Anyhow, as you say, $500 - $800 ish for a second hand OTA is a fair price and I would not fork out any extra myself for a quite old OTA.
