My last visit to the dentist
I'm off to the dentist in an hour to get 2 top front teeth removed and my partial dentures put in.
It's been 3 months of back and forth to the dentist with a total of 4 teeth removed and fillings getting my mouth ready for the partial dentures.
A total cost of $4250 funded through The Medicare chronic disease dental scheme rebate, which is ending in december.
As it was funded through medicare I shouldn't really complain lol.
I'd be happy if I never have to see a dentist again lol.

Never look a gift horse in the mouth
If the partial denture is just those 2 front teeth, there is something to be said for paying a bit extra for a Valplast R denture. If your dentist has not heard of them, get him to look them up. There are labs in Sydney who make them, not sure about Perth. Like everything else, they have their pluses and minuses. They look great(no wires as such), they are small and light(comfortable) and the base cannot break as it is flexible injection moulded nylon. The disadvantages are they pick up stains and are nearly impossible to add extra teeth to. They are not suitable for all cases. Mind you, having the cost paid by the taxpayer(Ok, it is borrowed money) should ease the biggest pain of dental treatment-the cost. Interesting how quickly people get used to their dental treatment for free and have no intention of ever going back if they have to pay for it. Like all the vote buying exercises governments do, they are easy to put in place, but extremely difficult to remove once in place.

The partial dentures are for both my top and bottom teeth with a total of 12 teeth in the dentures. And i was getting it done whether i was paying for them or not, and i will be going back to the dentist and it will be out of my pocket.
I have a full time job working a 38hour week.
I would never have know about the scheme unless my doctor didnt tell me about it. I was eligible for the scheme because I have a heart condition.

Grubby little secret
The reason Labor have wanted to axe the scheme from day one is that "rich" people could access the scheme. The replacement scheme(cynically to start AFTER the next election) is nowhere near as generous and is targeted to the so called "disadvantaged." The danger here is that a certain tipping point , life will be better for those not working than those working. Studies have shown that when those working get fed up with this unfairness, a rapid downing of tools will occur and the altruistic spirit NEVER fully returns. This is the sign that a society has collapsed.
Given that you will be paying for them, with 12 teeth, the flexible dentures may well be an option. Talking with colleagues, only about 1/3 are familiar with them. Ballpark fee for top and bottom flexible dentures, 12 teeth ,under $3,200.
Space Oddity's grubby little secret? I am a dentist who has been a big fan of the flexible dentures for over 12 years.

My original post was not intended for debate. It was merely an indication that i was getting teeth removed and dentures in and i would finally after years of embarrassment be able to smile with confidence and i was fortunate enough to be able to access the rebate scheme to get it done.
Enough said.

I got "gay bashed" when I was 17 (despite not actually being gay).
Theyey put rocks in my mouth and kicked me in the head,
Nice.
I've had to have implants. While this is a lengthy and painful procedure , I now have teeth that can break bone!
It's crap going through this but all-in-all I should have done it earlier.
I hope your recovery is swift and painless.
Peter.
PS. FWIW, the c%^&@ that did this to me were all maimed or died in prison.
My uncle, being a supreme court judge, obviously had nothing to do with it.

Thanks Peter & Ric.
My gums are healing nicely and the pain has subsided. I had the dentures tightened a bit today cause they were a bit loose and now they feel a bit too tight.
Its going to take a bit to get them right untill i get used to them i think.

Paula, you are better off having them a bit tight to start with, because they loosen off over time.

Paula, since you just had your teeth extracted your gums will change shape and resorb over the next 6 months or so. You will need the occasional adjustment and eventually a reline. But I guess your dentist will have told you all that.
