Flash problem with my 30D

I tried to do some fully auto flash images indoors with the built in flash, no matter how far away from the subject I am the images are very very dark (almost black).One of the images was light (normal) on the bottom half and the top half was very dark.
The flash is firing, the battery is charged & tested.
I can't figure how the internal flash has become un-sync'd with the shutter.
I can't find anything like this on a Google search.
Any ideas?

Try a full restoration of default settings then remove the battery, turn on camera without battery, press shutter release, turn off camera, install battery and try the flash again.
Are you in program mode? If in Manual mode check your shutter speed doesn't exceed max sync speed.

Set your FE lock by pressing the asterix button, while pointing the centre focus point on your subject. Then, recompose and shoot.

Have you checked that your flash compensation is set correctly - took me a go or two.
Also: what lens are you shooting with?
A large wide angel or telephoto will block much of the on-board flashes light.
This is usually seen as an cresent of light at the top of the frame.

Just love misspelling at times, I doubt anyone could make it up intentionally i.e " A large wide angel or telephoto will block much of the on-board flashes light".
