dreaded automatic updates curse

A while ago there was a thread about getting caught out on an imaging run when the computer downloads updates then restarts itself.
Caught me last night after I went to bed so instead of two hours of fine clear sky (after waiting all night) I got 30 minutes!

Yes they are a problem. It always seems to happen when you turn the computer on to check something in a hurry and find you need to wait 10 mins while it installs the last lot of updates.

I normally turn automatic updates off and leave it set to notify me but for some reason or other it often seems to revert to automatic when I least want it.

Start - Control Panel - Windows Update - Change Settings (on left) - Drop down menu choice of updates and notifications

I have Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them
