horses of courses

This photograph was taken by my dad (may he rest in peace) in 2007 on a trip to the Basque Country. These horses unfortunately were not wild and were purposely bred for meat. Hard to believe for a city slicker like myself that someone could kill these beautiful creatures. Having said that I'm not a vegetarian but sometimes shiver at the thought of what must be done in order to put a nice piece of steak on my plate, be that of a cow, horse, Kangaroo, you name it.

Thanks for looking.

Camera used was a Canon PSG3.

aye, it's sad. We have an equine abattoir in Caboolture.
One of the locals up here collects unwanted, vicious and permanently lame horses. He fattens them up on his property, then trucks them to the abs.
In his favour though, he will rescue any horse who shows a kind temperament, is sound and is safe to ride.
I've not heard of anyone actually breeding horses for meat, in Australia. It would be an expensive way to go about it, when you consider the number of horses that that go through the sales. At any country sale, you will see the "doggers" sitting on the fences, waiting to make a bid.
My last 2 horses were rescued.
