aye, it's sad. We have an equine abattoir in Caboolture.
One of the locals up here collects unwanted, vicious and permanently lame horses. He fattens them up on his property, then trucks them to the abs.
In his favour though, he will rescue any horse who shows a kind temperament, is sound and is safe to ride.
I've not heard of anyone actually breeding horses for meat, in Australia. It would be an expensive way to go about it, when you consider the number of horses that that go through the sales. At any country sale, you will see the "doggers" sitting on the fences, waiting to make a bid.
My last 2 horses were rescued.
