Cinema cameras and DSLRs

It looks like Blackmagic are shaking things up, their cinema camera looks like a nice alternative to the DSLR for shooting movies on a budget.

You can use your own SSDs for acquisition and capture in 2.5K uncompressed CinemaDNG RAW 12-bit capture as well as Apple ProRes and Avid DNxHD compressed video formats. It comes with Davinci Resolve and Ultrascope as well.
Looks interesting, can't wait to see some reviews.

Looks fantastic. It's probably very expensive when optioned up, but the base unit looks brilliant for the price.

Pointless.
I have no use for one.
I have a perfectly good Handicam.
It would break my gizmo budget. It's completely nonsensical to even consider it.

I'll take two please!

It is under $3000, if like me you already have lenses and an SSD or two, then it comes in quite cheap for what it is. I can't actually afford it though
SSDs are cheap, a 240GB drive is around $190

This is what is included in the price:
  • External 12 VAC Power Supply
  • DaVinci Resolve Software
  • Media Express Software
  • Blackmagic UltraScope Software
  • Detachable Sun Shield
  • Camera Strap
  • Turret Dust Cap

.

Someone on a different forum pointed out that the economics for buying equipment to make films is different from that for a full-time photographer.

Photographers use their camera gear all the time, so need to buy their gear - as well as getting backup equipment - so the camera cost is a major factor in what gear they use.

Most film makers don't buy equipment, instead they rent it for a few days to a few weeks at a time, and the equipment cost is usually just a smallish part of the crew, cast, location and production costs - so they can justify renting the best tools for the job, even if the purchase price is quite high.

btw Apparently the Canon 1D C is beginning to ship as well. It's a good time to be a film-maker, except if your name is Kodak.
