5D Mark III - Wow!

here is a single 3.2 second image with my new 5D Mark III....

3.2 seconds
16000 iso (yep - thats right!)
70-200 2.8L lens @ 200/2.8
fixed tripod

to say I am impressed by this camera is an understatement. This image is cleaner at 16 thousand iso than my 550D was at 16 hundred.

Yes I did crop the image - there was some vignetting in the corners, and I wanted to show as much detail as the 200kb limit would allow. I was quite pleased with how it came out especially at f2.8. I don't think I would be doing too much imaging at 16000 iso, but it sure is interesting

My next purchase (once the piggy bank refills) will be a portable tracking mount like astrotrac or starLapse.

this was JPEG - I haven't even started to play with the RAW stuff yet - still finding my feet. This is my 2nd 'serious' camera - the first was a 10D that I bought in 2004. But there is no comparison between the two.

Thanks H - with your enthusiastic posts when you first got yours, it is largely your fault that I am several thousand dollars poorer .

Now I have to improve my skills to be able to do it justice - any tips? I am at the point with my photography where I take better than average photos (you know - the ones that make your non-photographically-inclined friends go 'oooohh', but that are still light years from where you want them to be), and I have a reasonable technical grasp of the subject, but I need more practice 'seeing' what will make a good shot. And then there are some areas that am a complete noob - flash, studio, macro etc .

It is nice to be able to blame any deficits on me rather than not knowing whether it is me or the gear!

yeah, I was missing the vignetting...

with an AP mount this camera (and you) will clearly be able to show it's marvelous quality.

have a look at the vixen polarie, too, if you didn't rule it out already, I mean.

you're going to have a lot of fun, that's for sure!

I must admit, for some reason the polarie does not grab me - I am leaning heavily towards the StarLapse. I know the astrotrac is light and small etc, but being able to bolt on a dec axis and have a GM8 equivalent with the ability to autoguide is quite appealing. Also - I havent weighed them - but the 5D and 70-200 2.8 are quite hefty, and the beefier build of the Losmandy system would be comforting.
