I would like some nice big bright ones for when I am in Frankston for NACAA over the Easter weekend
They need to be bright enough to overcome the full moon though !

Pale glow, little colour, but with some moving patterns and occasiona; faint vertical rays here. Hopefully it will improve later in the night.

Ha not quite.

I put some warm clothes on and went up to the signal station lookout. I was treated to a moderately bright show of very rapidly pulsing green curtains to about 30° above the horizon to the South. Until the clouds rolled in about 23:30.

I like that. What's that comet you've discovered there in the left lower quadrant?

Are aurora's common in Tassie? I will be down there for a week during Easter (driving from Hobart up to Launceston, making a detour to Cradle Mountain) and would love to see one in the flesh. Do you recommmend me bringing my small Orion 80ST or my 15x70's???

No they are not very common at this time in the solar cycle, i.e. currently solar minimum.

This was the first one for 6 months (that I know of).

Not sure about your travel recommendations, personally I'd probably go with the binos, for wide field sweeping of the dark skies out on Cradle Mountain.

Thanks for the info guys! I will be with the wife and several other friends (total 6 people). We are renting a Tarago and driving around. I should be at Lauceston on the 17th of April from memory. Troble is all the people I am travelling with are not really into astronomy (well save one at least but she only has a passing interest) so maybe the binocs might be the go....

Darren

p/s: still hoping to see some aurora's though...fingers crossed...

Aurora chasers, your comments are required. This article was just posted in the Southern Aurora Yahoo Group:

<tt>

*********************************** **********************************

LOSS OF IMPORTANT SEC SERVICE.

On April 3, 2006, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric
Administration (NOAA) issued a press release announcing a call for
public comment on the value of continuing real-time solar wind data,
and products derived from such data, provided by the Space
Environment Centre. This is your opportunity to comment on the value
of this service. The comment period starts on April 3 and continues
for 45 days through to May 18. Public comments will be incorporated
into future plans to best meet the needs of the users.

Brief Background:

Currently there is no plan to replace NASA's Advanced Composition
Explorer (ACE) satellite when it or the monitoring instruments
ultimately fail. ACE is now the only source of real-time solar wind
data. During the next 6 weeks, you can let the NWS know of the
importance of solar wind data and products. You may wish to comment
on:

1. The value of real-time solar wind data and the products that use
it (alerts, warnings, forecasts, models)

2. The economic consequences to your business, or negative impact on
your activities (aurora chasing), if real-time solar wind data are
unavailable

3. The need for follow-on solar wind monitoring once ACE fails

If you wish more background information, go to the special National
Weather Service (NWS) web site http://www.weather.gov/os/space/

Please redistribute this notice to other customers you may know who
are also potentially affected. This is a one-time opportunity to
provide your input on this matter.

Please send an email to solar.wind.comments@noaa.gov or contact:

Oh yes ... being down in Frankston ATM, it was anounced at the conference yesterday that there were Auroas in Tassie on Friday night.
Did anyone see these ? Apparently they would have been visable from Frankston, had it not been

Hi Ian! Sounds like a great NACAA you guys are having there
I believe they were clouded out in tassie at the time from reports I read. This recent activity, while probably nice from Tassie or southern NZ, would of been pretty mediocre from the mainland, if visible at all.
It usually takes something special for it to be speccy from the mainland, even for southerly Vic.

Back from Tassie. Weather was pretty bad while we were there and I only got one decent clear night (at Bicheno...we stayed at Harvey Farm Lodge). Got good views of the LMC and the Carina region but did not get a chance to use the binocs as I was the barbeque chef for the night.....rest of the days were either cloudy or rainy

Darren

p/s: we got snow up on Mount Wellington on the 15th and at Cradle Mountain on the 18th.....cool....never seen snow
