Bright aurora over southern NZ tonight.

It's easily visible to the naked eye, even with my Mr. Magoo eyesight.

I'm at -44°, and 58 km SSW of Mt. John.

I don't think I've ever seen it quite this bright before.

The ASC software automatically archives the images every minute, so later I'll create an animation of the event.

Just returned from the Port Hills outside Christchurch, really great view from there and the first ever Aurora for me.

Below is a link to an animation I created with QuickTime. File size is 83.39 MB.

The first few files were captured 5 and 10 minutes apart, unfortunately, but the vast majority were 1 minute duration, and captured the most intense action. The first image is 18:40 15/07/2012, and the last is 01:00 16/07/2012, when the activity had essentially ended.

The next link is for a very short animation made from the stacked images created every 30 minutes by Moonglow Tech's All Sky Uploader app. File size is 2.96 MB. Same duration as above.
