Venus Transit Hydrogen Alpha the full disk

After last nights ASSA meeting I decided to work over the data and try to get the image at least mostly sorted for display. Several hours later I came up with the result below which still needs some work, but for the most part I am happy with how this image turned out. Especially given the hurried circumstances I was placed under due to cloud.

It was a wonderful event to witness again and it will go into my list of most interesting astro events that I have seen in my life. I really must do a top ten of those.

In this image you can see a lot of really large active regions but surprisingly not many prominences which is quite odd really. There were some around on the day but these did not seem to get recorded well.

Click here for image. Warning it is large, but hey this is the sun and that is how we want it. (900kb)

Feel free to comment or tell me what you think.

Hi Paul

A spectacular image of the solar disk in itself, let alone with the added bonus of Venus’ silhouette. It really conveys quite dramatically, the scale of our solar system and the powerful engine that drives it.

I sympathise with the amount of data you had to crunch and combine to produce this stunning mosaic.

Cheers

Dennis

Looks great Paul, I peeked at it on your website earlier.
I noticed the lack of proms compared to what I saw at the same time of day. Did you have any cloud at all?

Excellent image Paul. I even think that at the bottom of Venus you have managed to cature some of its atmosphere around the planet
