I am looking to go a bit up in aperture, and am testing the water with my "toy". I have had it long enough to know it is a cracker, and maybe I will simply get the bigger version, who knows. Before any of this can happen I need to sell this one.
A rare find down under, this Takahashi Mewlon 180 (7') f12 is in lovely condition.
Typical Tak build quality, and optically superb, with refractor-like images. With the planetary session arriving it is ideal, but it also excells on DSO as well.
Complete with front and rear caps, plus 2' adapter, 6x30 finderscope built into the handle.
A couple of small inconsequential 'nicks'.
Priced at US$1850 ONO, plus shipping from NZ.
Currently is riding on a Losmandy G-11, but I feel it would fit on most mounts, tube weighs about 7 kilos.
I have since built a beautiful Rimu (NZ native timber) storage case, and this is optionally available if required.
On group or off group, ask away. I have quite a few images as well.
Hi Paul,
nah, sorry. In fact the G-11 is an overkill anyway, a GM-8 or GP/SP/CG5 would be more than enough.
Mewlons are reasonably popular in the States, and this is where this came from. New the 180 is about US$2500 or so.
When the seeing is good, it really has refractor like star images, and the few looks I have had at the moon so far have been awesome. I have just started webcamming with it, and a 2.5x Powermate is as much as you need (gives 5400mm focal length).
Deepsky imaging is difficult, with the f12 focal ratio, but there is a reducer available that gives f9.

Striker,
I have a few spray cans, what colour would you desire? As an experienced graffiti artist I can assist here.
Dave, a shame, You mean the Meade 10"?
Gary
Tony,
The "road" is the driveway to the hanger (behind me when I took the snap). The driveway runs up past the house (also in the picture), putting green behind the scope.
Make sense now.
Darn Dave, a shame it didn't work out. The 10" will be way better on deep sky though, surely?
Like Ice says, size does matter.
Gary
Gary,
Yes the 10" would be better in most ways and mine has very good optics, as some have commented when viewing through it.
But at the time portability was what i was looking for.
Does not matter now, Observatory is on the drawing board.
I hope your scope goes to a good home as the Mewlon 180 is a very good scope indeed.
Dave,
it has a good home at present, and yes it would be nice to see someone else enjoy the spectacular views as well. If not I am happy.
I see (particulary in the US) so many people clamouring for a 4" apo, and wonder why not get something like the Mewlon 180. It is similar in cost, allows refractor like views, with the advantage of longer focal length eyepieces, and also far excells on DSO's. No brainer to me.
Good luck with the observatory.
Gary
Hi all,
I have decided to price this slightly more aggressively, and have reduced it to US$1650, plus shipping. Details apart from price remain the same.
