My best photo ever Sydney Harbour night pano

I did a photographic trip to Sydney Harbour, Opera House, Manly ferry the other day which was a great day all by itself.

At night the Harbour City really turns it on and is spectacular.

I did many shots. This one is an 8 image mosaic from Sydney Harbour Bridge to the CBD.

Camera Nikon D800E, 24-70 F2.8 lens at F4 and 1/4sec ISO1600, no camera noise reduction on a tripod. Taken from the Opera House walkway. Converted to jpeg in Capture NX2, lens distortion correction and slight vignetting correction, mild post processing (you don't really need to do virtually anything to these images).

Also this using a 14-24mm F2.8ED lens at F7.1 and 30 second exposures at ISO 50 (very handy to have low ISO to get longer exposures and it hides people walking past etc) 2 panel mosaic (I cropped a lot off the left as it made the image unbalanced). In camera noise reduction turned on.

Very nice, Greg! Have you compared the results from Capture NX2 to any other raw converters?

Cheers,
Rick.

Thanks Rick. No I haven't. I did read the DP review full review of the D800 and they showed comparisons with a few converters. They seemed to like ACR. I don't know there would be much of a difference. Also I don't know if ACR/Lightroom have the lens data for corrections. Perhaps they do.

Moire removal tool in capture NX2 is a bit of a joke. Easier to handle it in Photoshop. I have only seen it in a couple of images, usually quite distant buildings. One it was fairly strong though. This is out of 454 images (3 so far).

Time lapse and video of cityscapes however is another story. The moire in that situation is very bad and will need a filter to combat it or don't do time lapse or video of cityscapes or put up with the effect (its not that annoying if its casual videos but if you were a wedding pro and doing videos this is definitely not the camera,. The Canon 5D3 would be far better for that.

Its a familiar area isn't it? We live here and tend to forget how that harbour is one of the best in the world.

Greg.
