I think they did. At least one of those shots looks like it was taken in the 70's.

Edit: There's published documents back to at least 1961 detailing the existence of the buried bodies.

I have a book by Thor Heyhardahl called Aku Aku from back in the 60s where they excavated several statues. And I think drawings from the earliest Europeans to visit Rapa Nui (Easter Island) showed them with full bodies and inplace on stone walls ("Aha" I think was the name for the walls they were set on).

My sister was there earlier this year and shared photos of the bodies. Amazing pieces of work aren't they.

and don't forget they also had hat looking things on their head as well. I find it amazing some of the things the ancients did with massive stones. When I see how we lift and move massive objects today with cranes and big rigs then read about how they did it, blows my mind. I would love to go to all the ancient sites.
