I know there are many here who have known Warren over the years and tonight he has asked me to pass on his goodbyes to friends and those who know him.
Warren is gravely ill in the palliative care of his wife Jeanette in northern NSW. Warren has been ill for some time and things have taken a turn for the worse. His memory is fading and while he still is able he wanted to say his thanks and goodbyes to all those who he had met and known through astronomy.
Although not a member of IIS, I think purely because of his uncertainty with PCs, Warren has been deeply involved in Amateur astronomy in Qld for many, many years, something he is missing terribly. He knew the sky like very few and was enthusiastic about sharing that knowledge through his memberships with AAQ, SAS and BAS. Warren has a passion for visual supernova searching which rubbed off on me and for which I am deeply grateful for.
So on behalf of my friend Warren and at his request, Warren says goodbye.
I will leave it there for now and will keep you informed as events progress.
Sad to hear that Peter
Most of us who have been a long time in Astronomy in South East Queensland will have known of or Know Warren.
I hope all the time he has left will be without pain and in peace.
Please pass on my regards when you speak to him again.
I can understand that would have been difficult for you to write Peter and thank you for fulfilling his request. It is sad losing a great friend and it is sad to our past time to lose such knowledge. It is never easy and although I did not know him, I am sure he will be sadly missed.
Thank you for Peter for writing what must have been such a difficult post. I will remember Warren’s infectious enthusiasm and his kind, helpful nature. He is a veritable walking encyclopaedia on astronomy and I recall how his eyes always lit up when he had the opportunity to share that knowledge with others, within the club and astrocamp scene in SE Qld.
Peter,
Thanks for the phone call last night about Warren.
I did give him a call and things are not good.
Warren has been a good friend for many years and had an influence on my hobby of astronomy and certainly taught me a lot.We spent time down at mount Kaputar astro camps in the 1980's, and attended many club activities
in SAS and other clubs over the years.
I to have known Warren since the late seventies. Several years ago he helped me back into viewing again by giving me a scope. His generosity and love for observing is amazing. Although i am still in contact with him, i know he will be sadly missed, and not just by me. Doug Mcdougall.
I have just heard from one of Warren Sayer's sons that Warren passed away peacefully this morning at 4am in Ballina hospital.
I have just rang his wife Janette and passed on condolences, she will let me know when and where his funeral will be held which I will note here.
I am sure those who knew Warren even many who didn't will be saddened at his passing. We have indeed lost an amateur astronomer who was incredibly passionate about this wonderful hobby.
As Peter said one of the most enthusiastic people in astronomy, and I have many great memories of Warren from all those astrocamps and astronights. Its very sad to hear of his passing .
